Car* of Table Knives,
The chief cause of the destruction of
knivos is their treatment, or rather want
of treatment, as soon ns they are re
moval after the different meals. In
stead of being attended to first, they ore
left anywhere and everywhere, scattered
about, while the china and silver are
washed and dried, and then they come
in last, but not least, to be washed in
the greasy water, handles and all, and
then only half wiped; and so they lie
until to-morrow, tf there are plenty of
'other* to take to ; " if not, they* ar*
hurriedly cleaned just when the next
meal is going up. Now, the knives are
of the very first importance in “wash
ing up." Better far leave cups and
piates nnd silver waiting their turn than
delicate steel. I like better than any
thing a pewter can to wash knives in,
the height of wbicli should be the
length of a large table knife. .Fmd,
they should be wiped on a knife rag, and
then wash them in warm water in this
can, and then not only quickly dried,
but taken singly and separately out
of the water, and well and thoroughly
dried.
I wonder servants do not like and
wish to get their knives out. of the way
first, ana if they would only nse soap
and water, and dry thoroughly, I can
assure them that their knives would l<x>k
almost ft trio come to the table without
-any more cleaning, and if they would
only adopt this method daily the labor
at the knife board would bo far less.
There ought to be a japanned knife

and not cleaned, and a japanned box or

. When. Jacob became a fugitive from
tile finger of his brother Esau, he took
stones and laid them for a pillow. In
some nations a sort of cricket, of wood,
is regularly used Tor the same purpose.
The proper object of the billow is, not
to raise the head above the level , of the
body, but to fill out tbe dilTereiicoTx>
twwn the level of the shoulders nnd that
of the head when the body is on its side.
And this is the natural position, for it
is seldom safe to sleep on the back.
Hence, the pillow should be con

support for ite head, with the body ou
the side. It should not be too large,

This position is more important than
some think. For all the billot tire

veins of the neck, and, if these voi: ■ uv,

Further, pillows of feathers Should
never be used, for the head sinks into
them and becomes unduly heated.' The

is particularly necessary at night, nat

means of a series of yawns mi his part.
Another will secretly bring Into the ve

which arc furtively allowed to make their
way to the garments of the unsuspect

the silver piece which is passed by a lady
to be handed to the conductor, and in a
pretended fit of abstraction to carefully
insert it into the'operator’s purse, from
which it is released after some discussion
with an air of incredulity that the claim
made by the owner is unfounded. -Or
when a passenger of .anything like sus
picions aspect enters The omnibus one
will begin hv staring very hard at him,
and then, when he is not looking, pull
out a noteliook and pencil and take notes
of him with great assiduity. The other
passengers straightway suppose tliat the
note-taker is a detective, and that the
other individual is a criminal of some
sort, the consequences being that he is
regarded with suspicion and repugnance
not only during the rest ot the journey,
but on any other occasion whefi ho may

Lot’* Wife.
Prof. Proctor explains away th* Lot’s-
wife miracle by proving that she was
only buried under a meteoric shower of
sodium. Now, this simplifies it This
brings it out of the fanciful realm of
the supernatural, aud places it within the
credible sphere of every-day events. Wo
always had very grave' doubts of the
pillar-of-s< business, but when science
kindly explain* that the poor woman
was simply buried under a meteoric fall
of sodium, then we can readily accept it.
There is nothing singular, remarkable,
-t iHHisuid about tluri. Very few people
are there, indeed, who do not know of
Iquidreds of instance* in which their
Irieii-U and acquaintance* have been
caught out iu a shower of sodium and
buned. It it, wonderful, indeed, how
science simplifies the miraclfia.—Bur
