THURSDAY^
NOVEMRhR 23
»1!"
Nkxt Thursday is Thanksgiving dwy.
Jt should be universally observed. Good
crops and Democratic cyclones are rurely
ftiuTtansous. r
It is cheaper to raise bocon than to
^ buy It! " No farmer can prosper who
sells cotton at 0 and buys meat at 18
cents a
til* Legislature nicdjtjMaft Tuasdny.
James Simons of Charleston, George
Johnstone of Newberry and K. B. Mur-
nry of Anderson are the most prominent
Candidates for the Speakership.
Til* present cotton crop is estimated
at 7,000,0<)0 bale*. The prospect &r a
rise in prices is not promising. Hereaf
ter cotton will be profitable only when It
is a surplus crop.

Although Mr. Lee’e parents are, and
had been during his whole ll r e, and
long before he was boro, strict mem
bers of the Baptist Church, the subject
of this sketch did.pot embrace religion
until 1874-owing, perhaps, to tbe ex-
clteinvuts and uncertainties of hie Ills.
During that year he joined, at Atlanta,
the church of hU parents, and ho* ever
been a staunch, consistent member,
being called upon siteo be united with
tbe church to fill high positions therein
of reep^Qflbillty and trust.
In 1875 Mr. Lee married In Georgia,
and although ho has no children bis
married life has been one long court
ship where love rules supreme and
man and wife are all in all to each
other. Mr. Lee never goes anywhere
to be gone more than a day or two
without being accompanied by his
wife, and it Is said by tboee who know
that these two glide along life's high
way I'ke two streams that bad met
and mads one—forgetting all about
thair separate sou roes and remember
ing only tbe common end to which
they are journeying, Indissolubly Join
