It is made to undergo a rotting or curing process, by which what Is known ami termed the hark of the muss fiber is removed. This process requires from thirty to forty days and is effected- by iig the depositing the green moss in wet dishes or trenches, where a flow of water over And through the moss is secured. Subsequently, when the bark has been removed anil tho moSs has as sumed a black,, glossy color, it is ex posed to the sun, thoroughly dried, then baled and shipped to New Orleans, where other treatment awaits it. It must be understood that there are grades and elassifleations in moss, as in other articles of. commerce, and that they are adopted and- recognized as standards of type in the market and by the trade.- These classifications are four in number, ranging from No. 1 to No. 4, the latter being the highest type. When wJoss reaches New Orleans, it is sent, to the factory, where it is unbale 1 and picked, so as to separate the various types which may be in one bale, and after cnlling and immeraion in .batha. where it is thoroughly cleansed, It Is exposed to air and sun to be dried. It Indicatee rather ig norance than vice, and is a fact due rather to the social drilisation of the times than to special personal charao- teristics. For in America the common though rude test of character ia the ability to make money and generoaity in spending it. We do not admire a miser, we do not worship, os it is sometimes said we do. mere wealth. Thera is no commu nity where hoarding is more despised. Hut those men are most respected who have means and use them with liber ality. The m*n who has a handsome house, tastefully built and furnished, who drives a line span, who dresses himself and his wife and children well, who hires an expensive pew in church, who gives liberally to public and be nevolent enterprises—in other words. who apparently has plenty of money and tires it freely—is the man most likely s it freely—is the man most to be looked up to by all bis neighbors, including the deacons and the min- isteF. The test thus furnished is not altogether a bad one. If a man in America has money, this indicates cner- industry, tcmpcranca aniUhrift—in IfBei h>wrr« Male end rief, the economic virtues; if he spends it freely, this indieules a liberal, gener ous disposition—In brief, the chief so cial virtue. These two classes of vir tues—the economic and the social—by no means constitute a complete man hood; but they go very far toward mak ing a useful and agreeable member of society. The free fpending of money is furthermore umimaeiously cncoui%ged by miaisters and religious literature, rulpit exhortations to liberality are fre quent; to economy, rare. According to a recent account, tha Timm* machine de stroys three or four columns of type a day and will not “distribute," no that it has been found necessary to hare new type cast daily and brought to the- ma chine in tabes. Now ever, one who has seen the Colt machine work admits that its work in setting the tjh>e and in dis tributing it is faultless. By a very in genious arrangement it distributes while It sets, and the work of distribution be ing slightly more rapid than the setting the cases are always full. The distrib utor is regulated in snob a way that the instant the most frecuently used letter case (flay that of £) Is filled the work of distribution stops, to be resumed as soon as the case begins to b» emptied. If the machine will do the work of two men in setting type (and much better than this is claimed for it), it can readilv be said to do the work of four, since the tedious work of distribution is disposed of at the same time as a sort of side issue. And each letter gpes into its appropriate case as certainly and regularly as the Yale key fits into its own lock. The only doubts about the machine are as to the “fMOSCTT" but this is claimed to be complete now, and certainly it would seem a simpler thing to arrange this than to have made the other parts.— Hertford Cor.
