For in America the common though
rude test of character ia the ability to
make money and generoaity in spending
it. We do not admire a miser, we do
not worship, os it is sometimes said we

Hut those men are most respected who
have means and use them with liber

house, tastefully built and furnished,
who drives a line span, who dresses
himself and his wife and children well,
who hires an expensive pew in church,
who gives liberally to public and be

society. The free fpending of money is

recent account, tha Timm* machine de
stroys three or four columns of type a
day and will not “distribute," no that it
has been found necessary to hare new
type cast daily and brought to the- ma
chine in tabes. Now ever, one who has
seen the Colt machine work admits that
its work in setting the tjh>e and in dis
tributing it is faultless. By a very in
genious arrangement it distributes while
It sets, and the work of distribution be
ing slightly more rapid than the setting
the cases are always full. The distrib
utor is regulated in snob a way that the
instant the most frecuently used letter
case (flay that of £) Is filled the work of
distribution stops, to be resumed as soon
as the case begins to b» emptied. If the
machine will do the work of two men in
setting type (and much better than this
is claimed for it), it can readilv be said
to do the work of four, since the tedious
work of distribution is disposed of at the
same time as a sort of side issue. And
each letter gpes into its appropriate
case as certainly and regularly as the
Yale key fits into its own lock. The
only doubts about the machine are as to
the “fMOSCTT" but this is claimed to be
complete now, and certainly it would
seem a simpler thing to arrange this
than to have made the other parts.—
