Knowing of the machinations of
Melton and his strikers, of tbelr plans,
of tbe schemes and combinations that
were In operation, I feared tbe reeuit
if this question was left open and if
there was a
chance to effect Radical
ends by dividing us on this question.
I concluded to cast my vote on this
measure to make it a dead question,
one ou which no hope of success could
be ba- ed in this campaign, feeling as
sured that though some few might
make a hopeless fight against the suc
cess of the ticket nominated by the
regular line Democrats, still the num
ber making that fight would be small,
and with no stomach for it, as their ef
forts could ooly^ muke a temporary
discord, which would die out and gen
tlemen of sense and patriot Ism would
abandon it with sorrow and shame.
Consequently I voted for It in tbe Sen
