Btmngs as it siny samn at first sight,
everybody in the West Indies eats very
large meals. . The climate is so hot you
must take food freely to make up losses,
and ths appetite has to be stimulated by
s great variety of dishes, as well as by
the copious use of those very insidious
capsicums, and the etill more delicious
little red and yellow bird-peppers. A
few of these tempting fruits are placed
jn salt-cellars at every meal, and, with
the bright tropical flowers which invari
ably garnish the table in pretty speci
men vases, they give a general air of
pleasant —thetic refinement to the
whole arrangements. Breakfast is s
really solid and substantial repast, usu
ally put off till half-past 10 or 11 o’clock,
the pangs of pressing hunger being
■tilled before the early morning canter
by a cap of coffee in the bedroom.

made by the negro villagers from the
