Myopy among achoul-children and at- endanla at higher institutiaue of learn- ag in this and other countries has been Thoroughly investigated by Prof. Her mann Cohn and a number of other emi nent oculists, who have examined in all more than 40,000 acholarm. Prof. Cohn cites among the principal causes of myopy, badly-constructed adiooi-henchea, had writing and bad type. The latter evil, he says, deserves especial attention, nml for remedying it he makes some valuable suggestions, of which the following are the most im- xirtant: “ The meet important point is the |ize if the letters. We cannot determine 'hia by the measurement of the epi, as die printers do, for that regards the ihank of the type, of which readers know nothing; but it must be judged by a special measurement of the visible let ter. I have adopted as the standard of measurement the letter n, that being the most regular and symmetrical in shape in both tha Roman and German alpha bets. I have found that tha n in pearl type is about three-one-hundred tha of an inch high, in nonpareil about one-twen- ty-flfth of an inch, in brevier about one twentieth of an inch, in long primer one-seventeenth of an inch, and in pica one-fourteenth of aa inch. Wa have hitherto no definite rale concerning the amalleet size of letters which should be f- rautted for the sake of tha syea. Tha distance at which a letter of any partic ular bias aan be aeM> does not aflbrd a guide io it, for it does not eonuspond at all with the dials nos at which printed in tha aama type be read steadily at tha distance in reading.
