kuife. The usual formalities peculiar to
Indkn tribes were gone through with at
bis death. Six fiue horses and many fat
hogs were shot and killed at his grave,
and hi* rifle and hunting accoiitreinente,
together with cooking u'ensils, were
buried with him, so that Ite might have
the u&e of them in the “hippy hunting
grounds.” The remnant of Chipco’s
band now numbers but three warriors,
with their women, children and negroes,
and the chieftain’s mantle has descended
on the shonldcrs of Chipco’s oldest son,

made for relief, muny of which were
not of a nature to necessitate confine

walls—two from pneumonia,-one from
apoplexy, two from typhoid fever, one
from Bitcbt’s disease of the kidneys,
and two from phthisis abdominal!*.—

The Kusslaos have strengthened their
army by the novel addition to each
eoiopany of a pack of powerful and
carefully trained dogs. Three watch
ful animals are cent out with tbe sen
tinel* on picket duty, where their
aharp ears and still keener scent will
prove an impregnable batriet; to tbe
lurking spies of tbe enemy. The dogs
used are a species of bloodhound from
the Ural Mountains. The dog Is se
lected because of Its habitual slleuce.
It growls but never barks—a matter of
first Importance to soldiers near an
enemy’s camp. Tbe Ural bound Is
gifted with ao exceedingly One sense
of smell, keen ears, and is ever alert.
Most comforting of all to tha lonely
picket, tbe dog is said to be specially
courageous lo defending bis master.
It is curious that with tbs example of
tbe King Charles spaniels before us, no
one thought before of using these In-
telllgeat animals for sentinels. The
value of tbe plan Is self-evident. The
Muscovites have gone further, sod are
