"A graded school is properly nothieg but a group of schook organised into e system, tbe schools bein« adapted each to a different grade of pupils. It pro ceeds upon the assaaptioa that eerh pe riod of childhood has its own appropriate studies And molhodi of instruction, and requires, therefore, a school peculiar to Itaclf. Ax there are successive changes in the physical system, like that which occur* at pulwity, which divide the growth into stage*or period*, exhibiting new forces and phenomena, so in the in tellectual life its different periods are marked by the introduction of new fac ulties and new intellectual processes.— Every essential poser of the human mind can be detected, as a germ at least, in the first hour* of mental development, bW the evolution of these different facul ties does not go forward with equal pace. In the first of these the perceptive or acqniritive powers of the child are in chief exercise.
