The prehritig heed df the hour in tliii
State is a good public school system. • To
establish a reform the nttuoK must be
made upon the right objmitive points.
The mint important poiurs ttf commence
on are, first—an iacrcnse of the school
fund; second—a higher i-tamlerd'for
teachers ; and third—a lengthening of the
average sclwlastic term.
If (he school fund is incrcnacd to n
respectable figure, so as to Vuruifh n per*
manent and decent support, a bigber
standard for teachers enn very easily be
attained, because persons poasewed of
the proper qua ifications-would feel able
to assume the arduous and rasponsib’c
mU of public school tcachets, who now
CWinot afford to do ao from the fact that
they arc cnmprMod to aeek more certain
and rtataneraiive employiucul, in order to
provide for the wauta of theioselvca and
those dependent on them.
The average achol tatic term covers a
peiiod of not more than two or three
roonlhs, which affirda b»relry time to
initiate the child in I he simplest ele
ments of instruction, when the doors arc
dosed and he is sent about hie business
for the balance of the year . The u*xt
