There haa not boea a meeting of the
Democracy aioco the the memorable con-
vcnliou oC 1874, wkUk wiH be watclml
with a« muelcinteiaat by the people of
the county. It ahouffl be a body eotn-
poecd of the moat intelligent and patrio
tic men of the reepcctire cluhe through
out the county, and capecially of that
elam of rotera who liaac no poraoaal in
terest in the elevation ol iwiy particular
min to office As a rule, men who are
conepictiowa for worth, ard the (|aalifi*
caliona necessary for the intelligent dis
charge of the duties of a particular office
are generally recognised by the messt
and, (“for the grod of the counUy") it
{•never neeeaeary to pack a convection
ia order to aectua to the State or eounty
the services of some man supposed by a
particular locality to embedy all tbe^es-
for the office. la tbie eriaie of our Uh
tory the mau who would push himself
forward and seek to obtain a nomina
tion from the convention by any but the
fairest meani, u not the Lied of a<an
the Bute needs at this juncture.
The various clubs throughout the
eounty should be careful io the selection
ef delegates—that they be wen of good
arnae and unselfish patriotism—and
then tend them to the convention n > i>A-
«**f imfructioMt. The plan of inatruct-
ing delegates not only often results in
detriment U> party interests, but is a re
flection on the club sending the dele
gates, seeing that instructing a dele
gation argues that the club could not
electa n-presewtation in which confidence
might safely be reposed.
From time to time we have heard a cry
raised against the practice of rending
the seme men to several—perhaps all—
the conventions. This is the silliest of
nonsense. If you send a man to one
eouveation* and he discharges his duty
well, so from his attendance on the
first convention being urged as a rea
son why he ahould not be sent again , it
should be a. potent argument in favor
of his- being returned. The offices in
the gitl of the people are not made for,
and were never intended to be considered
m the means, furnished by the Bute.,
far supptying a support or an easy birth
to any. man, but they were created to
aiuiplily and enforce the Ihw and shonld
be filled by those men best calculated to
perform the duties of them.
We sincerely hope that the low, mean,
unutterably contemptible and undemo
cratic policy offl ate will not be per
mitted to show its poisonous head|iu
the convention. If personal hatred is
the only argument a delegate «an \isc
against a candidate the convention would
do itself honor to laugh such a political
pigmy to scorn. I fi the candidacy of one’s
personal friend cacao* be successfully
advocated-without tbe (firty pastime of
casting mud at his competitor, it would
become a difficult pioblcm to solvc;-r-

As Mr. H. M. Myers, Jr., is now be
fore the pobllc as a candidate for the
popular branch of the General Assem
bly, that there may be no misconstruc
tion In future when the convention
meets, It Is ray deey-e, briefly and dis
tinctly, to stste the circumstances that
lufluenced him before yielding his con
sent to become a candidate for tbe
Legislature.'
1st It was well known, as custom
had affirmed the tight that there
should be one representative in the
Legislature from the central or Court
house section of the county. This haa
been the custJW and the universal
concession,
21. It was authentically known,
that our present worthy representa
tive from the central section of the
county, had no desire and therefore
would not content., tinder any clrentn-
slnncee, to be a candidate for re-elec
tion.
3.1. It was well known and equally
rs well acknowledged, that the com
petitor-* fof the 8'afe SoiiHte, repte-
eents no special section or locality, but
such reprereutution embraces the en
tire county. The friend*, aa well as
the opponent* of the senetcrlal candi
dates, .together with tha delegates
composing (he nominating convention
therefore fully reoogotzo the Issues
pending as between Senatorial and
Representative candidacy, and tha
8U|iport claimed for the respective
positions of honor. Consequently, the
cfalmsfor the Senatorialsupport does
not necDesartly entitle the unsuccess
ful candidate for the Senate, to tbe
support or nomination to the popular
braucb of the Legislature. Au adverse
conclusion would be uujust to the con
vention, and it wbtrld be but erecting
it Into a mere political “chance med
ley, 1 'clothing each candidate with the
character of an ‘'(River Optica,” ever
watchfol, noxlonely a waiting for 'some

The PXople, that the noroiositog con
vention la called for the 18th of Au
gust next, and I beg leavedor spneo in
your paper t® say a few words in re
lation thereto.
The constitution of the State re
quire* that the auditors and treasur
ers of tb© several, couutlta shall be
elected by the people, but the Legle-
lature having fulled to enatit laws to
enforce this provision of the eonsUtu-
tlou, these officers are uow appointed
by the governor. Would it not be
much more satisfactory alibe to tbe
governor and the people generally,- if
the county nominating convention
should nominate a county auditor and
treasurer, and submit them to the
governor to be appointed by him? It
Is a great deal better for t he governor
to be advised, In making these appoint
ments, by one hundred and fifty, or
one hundred auej. seventy-five Demo
crats sitting as a convention than by
six Representatives In the Legislature.
I hope this question will be agitated
and brought to the attention of the
clubs and finally acted on by the con
vention. Will uot some of your cor-
respondenfs discuss this subject f

Mr. Emroa': The f^tentTa of F. H.
Creech; K-q., have presented his name
to the voteispf Barnwell couuty as a
suitable person to fill the office of
Sheriff, aud it k the object of this com
munication to present the elaloiH of
Mr. Creech upon the people of Barn
well county for their suffrages In that
election. The writer, himself a sol
dier, addresses himself mainly to sol
diers ol the late war and feels assured
they will understand’ and appreciate
the justice of Mr. Creech’s claims. At
tbe same time ho appeals to' a fair and
Impartial public to JudgeQf the merits
of ills case, and if there is no one in
the field who has greater claims upon
the people of Barnwell to remember
Frank Creech when they elect their
delegates or cast their primaries for
county officers. Mr. Creech Is at least
the equal in point of education and
ability to fill the office of any man yet
announced. As a man ef character
he is the peer of any man in the field
or elsewhere, aa^or the very neces
sary qualificatioKf firmness and res
olution k.is record bears him out. He
has faithffllly discharged the duties of
the office of County Commissioner-
one of no profit and at great sacrifice
of bis personal interests. Last b it not
least bisjcareer as a soldier in the In
fantry branch of tbe service during
the late war, in t he hard Tought and
bloody fields ef Virginia and Tennes
see challenges comparison with any
man in the field. He enlisted with
Hagood’s 1st South Carolina volunteer
regiment fa'fhe year 1861, and was
with that command through all the
memorable campaigns in which his
regiment participated In Virginia and
Tennessee. He served as a private
during the entire war ; received R gun
shot woundf through the leg at WiHes
Valley, Tennessee, and at Fort Hard
son, where Hays and Bellinger were
killed and a host of other gallant and
true men, among^thenTJ. W. Rice aud
E. W. Behliug and others received
desperate wotfeds, F. H. Creech fell,
as was supposed, mortally wounded
from a gun shot wound, shattering his
right arm ai d pas-ing through hi#
right lung, thereby entirely .disabling
him in the use of his arm so much So
that be is now unable to support him
self by manual labor, much less the
large and dependeut family on his
hands. In the campaign of ’76,.when
our beloved Hampton was inaugural
ed and Carolina redt-i-med, he raised
a company of sixty men and tendered
them to the Governor tor the use of
our State. *
It has been the universal custom In
the State of Georgia to give such
offices to competent disabled soldiers,
as an evidence of appreciation of such
services in those trying times, and in
submitting the claims of F. II. Creech,
the writer cannot think the people of
South Carolina are less patriotic. .
