The dumb-founded spectators after-,
ward said that at first they thought it
w?s a hurricane in disguise, or a cyclone
traveling incognito, that grabbed that
boastful old robber, with the rampant
green umbrella, by the hair of his neck,
just ns he finished Ids boastful speedi,
and knocked two apple-barrels over with

But on second thoughts they cone I ud rd
that it was a woman,for as the authority
on managing wives went out into the
street in cotnpaiw with most of the t-treet
door, (he propelling power behind him
remarked:
‘,‘Out again, are you, you lying old
fool. Telling the folks about managing
wives—will yon? Oh, you brassy fnce-
ed hypocrite; Til learn you to sneak
awty from your wedded wife, and blow
about your being. bom of me, your
blasphemous gas bag!”
[The foregoing selection was made
outside of our office and was received
through the mail, accompanied l-y the
following note of explauatioo:
“Mr. Editor: I know that you are
anxious to know how to manage a wife

After a careful reading of fhe recipe,
wc fail lo see any qyidence of its
efficacy. “The wife in the play’’ don’t
manage worth a cent, but we suppose it
is a very fair average picture of wifely
docility and connubial joy. However
we suppose our fair(?) contributor knows
bow it is herself, and we shall take it as
a friendly warring of the sVa’s and
quicksands by which a married man h
beset, and return to a contemplation of
our single state with renewed gratifica-
tiou and fervent thanks to the fates for
preeorving us from the matrimouial

Baked Tomatoes—Take large toma
toes, make a bole lo the end, till with
bread crumbs well seasoned with but
ter, pepper and salt Bet them in a
dripping pan and bake.
Artlflclsl Oysters—One pint of grat
ed sweet corn, one-half etip of sweet
milk, one teaspoon of salt, ooe-balf
teaspoon of pepper, two-thfrds cut of
flour, one egg. Beat well and fry like
griddle cakoe.
Pudding Sauce—4 tablespoons of
sugar, 2 tablespoons of butter, 1 table
spoon of flour beaten to scream. Add
tbs white of an egg beaten to a roth,
and pour Into tbe whole a gill of boil
ing water, stirring ft very fast Flavor
with lemon, rose-water, nutmeg or
wtne.
