I)r. Traichlcr, Gcnnnn phjakian, ha*
lately made a^me much-noted comment*
on habitual headache* among jonn*
people, a trouhla which ha avert in
largely on the increaee. He i# inclined
toattribwteit io eaenaaiee iwtelleclu’l
exertion, often oamed by the fancy of
partnu for hnyb g arcH yaikty of
subJtfctrWo^hf, and more Especially
to night work, which, he snya, pioduces
in the brain the same condition as would
be produced in the muscles, if, after a
long day's marah.a i*Quntfun-cliuibej:
wereldcsttima walking far eamto the
night, and were to repeat this day after
day. Dr. Trokhler’s letter has atieiUHl
from a London physician a statement
that ho has aometimes found the brain
to bo growing fiastsr than the skull
which contained it. What seemed like
great stupidity was for a time the result,
hut in time the skull effected its enlarge
ment, and the bruin was relieved. One"
of the dangers mgpt likely Ur occur in
schools arises ftm* the fact that the sumo
lessons are necessarily allotted to a’I .in *
class, and while they entail no effort of
inUlloct on the part of aoy one. may be a
frightfwUwbor to another. It i-tihe dull,
tuttfrioM pupil, we suspect, who ofteu-
times rm the most wijnred by school
pressure, and it should bo the study of
the teacher to recognize him or her and
afford aid and encouragement.

'TkiisD Crrifan—Ton think that
parents, ministers, fashionable dinners,
make, or nearly «n, alt the drunkards,
and .' you are disposed to abuse them
A boy once leaped into a river, and w«s
drowning—ho called lustily for hclp.
and the man, Who came to hb rescue,
began to abuse 'him fbr bis rashness:
“Save me first,’’ said the boy, “and
then abuse me afterwards.” Now a true
man will save the drunkards first, and
then after that, abuse those who make
tbem to be drunkards. This is just what
we wish you to do—help ns save the
drundards first, and after that nbuee the
minUters, and deacons, and psreuta, and
fine dinners, if it be a pleasure to you.
Carrying. concealed weapons is an
evil. It is a privilege, however, which
we have always enjoyed, and it is only
nnfil recently that it is denounced a
great crime Tha reason wo go armed
is various. The oivil war m idi life un
safe. and every man felt it his dutylo
protect himself, and thoro are several
instances of men saving their lives, by
being armed, from the attacks of rob
bers. Add to this, if voa ple&ke, the
general demoralization of tociety, caused
chiefly Lyithe too free use of intoxicat
ing drink, and yon will see that the na •
tural tendency "Would be fp go armed.
Now the weapon itself can do no harm
in the pocket of a sober man; but let hta
brain become heated, with alcoholic
drinks, and the steam, -enersted there,
will move his hand, and his baud the
pistol. Pot away the steam of alcohol,
and the pistol will lie quiet in the
pocket, unless the man s life is in im
minent danger by malicious persons.
Suppose we pass a law forbidding con
cealed weapons, a man may wear it out-
teidc to be seen. Now, if twenty men
go into a prog shop and get drunk, end
each one ha* a revolver in his belt visi
ble, they will use these srms when the
fttoMt of alcohol gets up. just (he same
as If concealed. Remove the cau*e,
the intoxicating drink, and there wtii be
no disturbance.
Again—if you were to pass a law for^
bidding concealed weapon*, the sober
and law abiding would be the first not to
carry them. The men who frequeflt
grog shops would still retain them
First: Bemuse they are leas law-abid
ing. Second: Because they imagine
that other* who go there are armed, It
is more difficult to enforce a law now
than formerly. The nature ofsll Repub
lics breed iimuborjinalioo among the
less cultivated. The root of the evil
lies in intoxicatingdnnk. Remove that,
and sobriety will regaiu public confi-
denoe. ami the uw of concealed weapous
wid, generally, 4»w*ppesr.
lam opposed to the public sale of
into xicgtiug drink, beemnw it injUte*
the human body. It makes the voice
gnttersl, hardens the liver, currucrates
tke stwiaeh, weaken* the muscular
fibres.mifeehlos the action of the heart,
heat* the akin, inflames the eyes, makes
the breath nauseous and affects more er
less the whole nervaus system. The
Vain becomes feWTtti;‘ the fumes
ot the alehohol enter it* cavities
ami affect the i in agination. In fine, the
intemperate man beeotna* onfit to en
dure the extremes of heat or cold, and
of all men they are first to fall by tha
breath of au epidemic scourge.
Disease will affect the moral prccep-
lion of a mau and destroy bis sm-e of
moral right. Alcohol doc* the same
thing; and the law rreojwiee* the fact
in providing and guarding the inrbrigte
against imposition, for a note given, or
a Ooptr iet made by him in a state of
inebriety i* net valid. Fofthosamc rva
win man wid beat their wive* nod chil
dren—from whom thny would sternly
refuse to be patted in their sohSr mo
ments. The moral faculties in such
cases are deadened, a~d the baser pas
sion* are stimulated to their biehiwt ten
sion The relation between the physi
cal snd intellectna! nature* of man l»e
oontoa disorganised, and the tnau fo-
fPOnwovufit for intellectual labor. Man
who art mere or lew under the influence
of liquor are incapable of sentdy mental
application. Their reasonings will be
wild and incoherent, correspimding to
‘jflke vapor* genurated by the fumes of
alcoholic drink.'
To correct the evil, I would suggest,
first, that wo grant no license : second,
that we pay morn attention to thi snbjeet
of moral and intellectual education, aud
so raise the standard »f mind and mor
ality; third, that we hang every man
who kills another, except in actual and
positive self defense, no maftcr who he
is—rich or poor, and fortrth, that we
take away from the Governor the par
doning power, and place it in the hands
cf the Judiciary, who shall meet stated
ly to hear aduitional evidence and de
cide upon their merits. Make these
laws, and rigidly enforce them, as if our
very lives depended on them, and the
concealed weapon* will in time bo laid
aside to a very .great extent, and mur
ders will become far less. To stand up
and have another to shoot yon down,
snd that, too, with a full conviction
fhal'the innrderef will not be hung;
that either private friendship or monev
will screen the murderer, is not the
right plan to bring about a reformation
First of all, strike at the root of the
evil by forbidding tbe sale of alcoholic
drinks; and bloody noses, and black
eyes and mnders will diminish at a pi
ing rate.
A lady, tbe daughter of a drunkard,
was accused of immoderation on tbe
temperance question. Ilor poem, on
the sufferings of her mother and self,
concludes thus :
“Tall na I bait the howl?
Hate is a faabla word :
I tooth, abhor; my very soul
With sirang disgust la stirred
Whene’er I see, erhear, or tell
Of the dark beverage ef Hsu,.”
