standpoint we are in doubt whether
or not to be gratified at the defeat of
Grant and tbe nomination of Garfield.
There is no doubt that Grant oould
organize a greater enthusiasm among

Convention, last week, after select
ing delegate? to the National Conven
tion, concluded, wisely we think, to
proceed at once to the nomination for
State officers ; and the result is aa

the extreme white supremacy notions
of certain Democratic politicians, and
demonstrated, beyond cavil, that the
vast majority of the Democrats of the
State hold in good faith and in all its
length and breadth, the humane, just
and wise Hampton policy that trium
phed In 187G. In short, onr State
ticket will be a help and not a burden
to the National Democratic party, In
the coming Presidential contest.

the wealth and population of South

When the grand jury came into my
effloe for information, I took our. last
settlement sheet to show therfi what
mboeys had been collected, what bad
been disbursed and what reoAeihad on
hand. By a careless entry in copying
tbe settlement sheet the sum of $2,*

opposite tbe words "cash on hand
from collection of poll tax,” and I
stated to tbe grand jury that you had
this amount OB hand—less vouchers
for amounts disbursed—which, of
course, was an error, as "nrilla bona”
represents money not collected. I
