Swallow .Savannah, May 8.1880.— As the time is not far distant when the good people of Barnwvll county will be called upon to select public servants for the next ensuing two and four years,it. may cot be out of place to ntulea, - Ur U-fi v, the peat eer v i ees and future fitness of some of the present Incumbents, In connection with their candidature for re-election. Rotation in office is an herculean argument which is being n«ed by some of the disaffected “outs,” as a reason why there should he, at the approach- inf ejection, an entirely new deat; but would a successful farmer, havlug the welfare of his family an«l his own pe cuniary interests at heart, discharge from his employment, an honest, dill gent and capable laborer, who had been In his service for two or four years, for no other cause but that tbe laborer bad been blessed with a kind and generous mister, and had been the recipient of fatr wages for his ser vices? . —^ The above question Is susceptible of but one answer, not only with re- fereogft_tCL.f»>niei8. but to all other vocations in life—the merchant car tainiy would not discharge, from his employment, a clerk, who had, for several years proven diligent, honest and trustworthy, simply because be thought another, |(though untried) would he equally so; the chances would be altogether against the busi ness success of each a course of pro cedure. No railroad noi manufacturing com pany could long succeed in business which made a rule to change Its most trustworthy employees at stated periods, for no other cause than that the time had arrived for tbe exchange of those true and tried servants, to make room for others, who ha t not vet been tried, and who, - la all proba bility, after strVet trial, would not prove as acceptable as their predeces sors. If tbe above arguments are based on sound business principles, with regard to Individuals and rations, which I beileve every cai and sensible man In the county will admit, why wlB not the same ar gument “hold water” with reference to those of our oflUlala who have been weighed in the balances and found worthy ? The old rule of “let well enough alone” is a good one, and the horse jockey’s Idea of horse swapping is peculiarly adapted to the subject in hand, when he s»jid that he never knew a man to swap areal good horse without, being cheaTd. The offleea of Ceifcof the Court and Sheriff seem to puBsess peculiar at traction*. with quite a number of Barnwell's worthy sons, nil of whom are, no doubt, very tlever and honor able gentlemen, andas all of theAe as pirants, save one to each of those sltlons, are sure t* be disappointed, would sqggest a course which I think would prove magnanimous ou their part, and entirely eatiafsc ory to the county at large, that la for all of the candidates for th» two office* above Indicated, to withdraw, and pledge their unqualified sipporlpj the present Incumbents. Th«n Br.mwell county would be justly entitled to a gold medal, as the banner oouoty of brotbetly love and harmouy, witbthe names Of each of those gentlemen 1c- scribed thereon, together witji the tnotives which prompted their unsel fish conduct , , , MaJ. Brabham has filled his present position so entirely to the satisfaction' of every one, t hat whenever the ques tion is asked, from one end to tbe other of the county, “who will be our next clerk of the Court?” the answer involuntarily comes "in thefoim and manner following t” '• Major Brob- ham !” So I say let it be Maj. Brab- bate: one Who for thirty years has served bid Barnwell In various capa citive, fa pbabw “affti in-war; and in each and every capacity has but veri fied tbe good judgment and confidence of bis constituents, in demanding tils services on all important occa sions. As I have above remarked with re ference to Maj. Brabham, so also, with regard to Cqpt., Lancaster, who for montbsafte* his installation xn Sheriff of Barnwell coijnty lu 1876,Tan tha sheriff’s office without a dollar of pub lic money—advanOtoJc from his own meane, the'wti«irewith to Aucbessfnlly carry on th® business of the office, with no certalntynor assurance that bis money would ever be refunded to him; but patriot Ilk®,ad he is,he wa* willing to risk, and did risk his private funds for public purposes, at a tittle, too, theft “tried mens souls”—when Hampton and Hagood, and the balance of our leaders were struggling for political existence, against the armed minions of a military tyrant. Aipt. Lancaster is Deculiarly fitted for the sheiifTs n Its various and arduous duties, his coolness and coin age under the n^ost trying circumstances, his uloso atten tion to business, together with his m’any other amiable quallti •« bf head and heart. . . - 1 The office of sheriff is like that of newspaper editors—a great many think they can edit a paper much better than the cuitor, but when they, try it they are reluctantly forced to the conclusion that they have missed Their catling; Our present sheriff has pro veil a success, so lets keep him... There is another class of politicians which are entitled to brief mention, viz : Self-nominated political mendi cants. If there is a class of beings which a generous and justice-loving people should abhor and detest, it to that class which are ^ntluually blow ing their own horns and endeavoring to impress the public with their pecu- Jiar fitness for this, that or the other puhl|c< office, who claim lo be more patriotic than any one else, especially where the reward for their patriotism is a good, fat, office; men who desire the pdblic to behold in their persons the greatest political oracles of the day; such men fear that they will be forgotten in the general distribution of tbo spoils of office, and are con stantly reminding a long suffering and patient constituency that they are, at all times, willing to sacriflce them selves to the good of their dear coun try; provided they have but little to do, and get well paid for it; in other words, those polilleal vultures, who hovel- around public assemblages, and are constantly on hand during cam paign time, with the hope that some one with more presumption than brain or |dlscretion, will invito them to be come candidates, and if the hoped for invitation is not promptly foithcomiog, they very magnanimously offer them selves a willing sacriflce qp tRe alta r cf their country—good pay being, of course, a conditioh precedent thereto.
