is so ably written, so true mid so ap
plicable to our own country that wc copy
it entire, adopt it ami commend our
readers to a careful perusal of its clarion •
voiced sentences:
The devotion to lirjuor, ns every one
Lno*8 who knows anything gbout his
country, is the besetting sin of tho
nation; and, so far from trying to check
this besetting sin, wo encourage, wc
render attractive, we pr<Jtc*t, wc in
definitely multiply, wo thrust at every
step before those whom St is most likely
to destroy, innumerable temptations to
ft; and this wc do, and couti mo to do,
though wc knew that so dillicult is it
for tho poor, even when they wish f6
keep aloof from it; so subtle, so rapid,
fatal, enslaving, is the horrible fascina
tion of it, that a m in often becomes u
drunkard almost before he secs the
nwfuliMsss of his peril; and when once
he is a drunkard, most often he is hur
ried all downhill with a fatal rapidity
into incurable ruiu of body, mind, and
voul. Can we then wonder that, more
and more, by common confession, a con
fession, alas ! how humilatiug, of a fact
bow notorious, the national vioe of Great
Britain is drunkenness? Not one day
p isiotwithout our witnessing its terrible
ravages. To the ruin ii engenders, all
alike bear witness. From tho army,
from the navy, from great cities, from
country villages, from the police, from
guardians of the poor, from manufac
turers, from merchants, from tradesmen,
from all Urge employers of labour, from
physicians, from judges, from the clorgy
of every <!e lominution, and most ottcu
aud most bitterly from thus workingmen
themselves, come ponring in the ac
cumulated testimonies—emphatic, heart
rending, unmistakable, reiterated—to
the prevalence, to the increase, to the
deadlineas of this degrading sin. Do you
who arc rich and respectable—you wlm,
shut up in your stately houses or quiet
hlines, know nothing of this, and there
fore, nursing in some delicious stillness
your dainty loves andslothfulsyinpnthies,
hear it with indifference or impatience?
If ytfu would know what drunkenness
is, if you would learn what cause there is
to lift up tho voice respecting it,
leave your ease; do not be afraid for once
to sicken your sensib lilies; do not be
aftrsid to soil yonr robes. See women,
or what hod once boon those gracious
beings, shrieking, fighting, blaspheming,
pawning the very shawls off their backs,
and the very bed on which their chil
dren lie. Watch the poor v ragged,
emaciated drunkard—lost to health, lost
to respectability, lost to shame—reeling
from the counter where he has over and
over again shamefully squandered wliat
might havd kept himself and his family
in eomfort and independence. Follow
him, at least in imagination, to the
chronic and squalid misery of that bare,
foul room, which might have been a
home. See his children fly from him
terror-stricken, and huddled away out
of sight in the corner, in street, any
where. See his wife—but, the picture,
though infinitely less than tho reality, is
too horrible; and you may see this
almost anywhere; you may see it almost
nny day; and when you have seen it you
will know at last why the hearts of
thousands sink within them as they con*
template tins standing shame, this
clinging curse, this eating canker of our
prosperity and of our life. These are

The nature of tiie study—its relations to
all other study and to life, the proper
methods of pursuing it, the literature
connected with it—all these should be
presented and explained in such a way
thfCTu pupil on beginning has some idea
of what he is undertaking, and the pea-
son for undertaking it. Then,
this time, tho educator is Vo remember
that
he is less a task-master than a
teacher, and that if his pupils do not
get along well, it js mainly ids fault. If
tliey have been properly presented to the
study," Trad their wiy into it has becti
made interesting by his intelligent and
enthusiastic leading, they will be in-
terestedj otherwise not. W’e TufST
known pupils to go through years of
study in the mathematics without un
derstanding anything as they ought to
do, i>mJ, gt last, to bring their Utudy to
a most frmilcss and unsatisfactory tew-
urination, simply, because they had a
teacher who regarded himself as a task
master, and would never take tho time
and pains to teach them and make the
stops of lheir progress plain. No man
is fit to teach who will leave a pupil
floundering in and through a study for
the want of intelligent help aud direc
tion. It is a teacher’s business to teach,
and not to leave his pupils to find out
what they can themselves, and hpld
them responsible for their own instruc
tion. Education is oot the result of me
morizing facts, now wholly of under•
standing and arranging them, of course;
but so long as we study text books, aud
practically record our progress by means
?>f them, there is no such inspircr as an
intelligent; sympathetic and enthusias
tic teacher. * * A first class teacher
