The charge of Judgu Aldrich was
strictly fair and Impartial, and after
an absence of fifteen minutes the jury
retu|usd a verdict of "qpilty,” with a
recommendation to mercy. The pris
oner received the announcement with
perfect calmness, but on bis way to
the jail his feelings overcame him.and
the coustabl s found it necessary jo

Thusrday Morning: The casa of tbo
State against Gapers Bowers, for tha
murder of Marian Sullivan, was called
promptly at 10 A. M. The faota a»
developed on the trial were, as fol
lows: Ou the night of the 9th of
October last, Wymun and W. G. Gray
and Marlon Bulilvnn, were at ths Store
of Miles Loadbolt,- in th!e County.
Mr. Barber aud seversl nsgrocs were
present. Oae of the Garys was play
ing his fiddle; Bowers came into the
store, swore he was the best man on
the hill, and commenced dancing.
Gray ceased playing, because he was
out ofroeic. It was suggested thatsbe
could procure some at a stump out
side ths «tore; Bowers had sworn
several times that be wua the best
man on the hill. The two Grays and
Bulllvan went out for the rosin; Bul-
livan, remarked, boys, do you tee how
that man U imposing on me. W. C.
Gray slipped bis pistol to Bullivau.
They obtained a chip with some losln
on it; went back lut^the store, held it
over the 9re of a lamp, softened It and
rubbed It on the sttiuge; when they
went back In tha house Dowers was
near the door; Bullivan inquired if
Bowere had gone.' Bowen replied bo,
swore be was tho best aau lu the
hoiisc, Sullivan hoftWered, that be was
m man also, Bo Wets then drew hip
pistol fired and ran oufr*of the house,
according to ona witness, Bullivau
drew his pistol about the same time
and fired a few seconds after Bowers
did. Sullivan advanced to the door
with his pistol in his hand, leaned .out
and hoked for Bowers. From the
darkness Bowers fired a second time,
and Sullivan fell out of the door. He
was carried home and died two d^ys

rich, the Jury retired aud after a brief
conference brought in a verdict of
guilty. ThA prisoner received the
