made, the child was found dead in a

Mary Howard, a colored child, was
locked In her house in the suburbs
while her mother went off on a visit

cabin on the plantation of Capt. G,
Bwygeit, 14 miles north of Columbia,
was destroyed by fire about ip o’clock
Tuesday night. Two men, n woman
and six children, all oolored, perished
in the fl imes. The firs was dleoover-
«d by a colored woman who ran to the
burning building aud pulled off a
board whoa she heard one of the chil
dren attempting to awaken its father
without succ-ss. Ikfore assistance
arrived the cabin anil its occupants
were burned up. The chimney was a
crude & flair, made of clay and sticks,
and is supposed to have Ignited while
the negroes were asleep. The cntrfn
bad but one door and no window.

Th« subject of this notice was a
man of rare and sterling worth, a
devoted Christian, a useful'citizen, a
most kind neighbor, a most obliging
friend, nloving husband aud affection
ate father. Hls death is a great loss,
which the community deeply feels and
bemoans. When It became generally
known that be wns soriongjy ill the
whole neighborhood whs greatly
concerned, aud do doubt, many
prayer's were offered up, that God
would spare his useful life still longer.
But Divine wldsom determined other
wise. The disease, despite the best
medical attention, pursued Its work of
death till consummated. God favored
him with a very happy eubhanasy,
“-He passed away us a candle goes
out;” our loss hi bis eternal gain.

this great affliction.’
