one of the district courts for admission

Judge to ascertain his qualifications.
The examination began with :
Do you smoke, sir ?
I do, sir.
Have you a spare cigar ?
Yea.
Now, sir, what is the first duty of a
lawyer ?
To collect fees.
Right. What is the second ?
To increase the number of bis clients.
When docs your position toward your
client change ?
When making a bill of costs.
Explain.
Wo are then antagonistic. I assume
the character of plaintiff and he becomes
the defendant.
A suit decided, how do you stand
with the lawyer conducting the other
aide ?
Check, by jowl.
Enough, sir; you promise to become
an ornament to your profession, and I
wish you success. Now, are you aware
of the duty you owe to me ?
Perfectly.
Describe it. , ^
It is to invite you t* diink.
But suppose I decline ?

a thaler, adding a fbw warm words of
approbation. When he had returned
hoifle, and was sitting at breakfast, he
told his valet to fend the inspector, and.
after describing the dress and appear
ance of this pattern of womanly industry,
ho asked that functionary if he knew
her name. “Oh, yes,” replied he, af
ter little hesitancy, “The girl whom
your excellency has so richly rewarded
is, alas ! Marie Rauer, the field-thief.
The people say of her, your excellency,
that she makes, hay while the sun
doesn’t shine.^ She came out of jail ouly
a month ago. Sho has, no doubt, gone
off with an apronful of your excellency's
clover, as wall as your excellency’s
thaler.”
It is a common, though nrstaken
idea that labor was imposed upon man
as a cutse. Tho first we read of Adam
after his creation is that he was placed
in the garden of Eden “to dress and to
keep it.” This requirement was before
tho fall, and, sin or no sin, the Creator
destined man to work. It was a heathen
poet who said: “It is a slavcls duty to
plow, and a freeman* busincmtegpnjqy
tho fruit of the plowing.” Unhappily,
this opinion is shared by many, even
among farmers and mechanics. In
schooling . their sons they aim not
to make them educated farmers and
mechanics, but rather to shun these
avocations because !hcy are connected,
as they suppose, with degradation and
drudgery. The object should rating be
to honor the calling of the tuthcr^y
teaching the son to bring more knowl
edge and practical wisdom to ,t,hc com
pounding of soils and the construction
of labor-saving machines. If mere blind,
unthinking force moved the plow and
the saw we should not be able to boast
that perish. Instead of toiling wearily
by some mountain stream, intelligent
man dammed up its waters, and com
pelled it to saw and grind and spin for
him. Instead of tho dim Indian trail or
rude highway designated by marked
trees, be constructed a road of iron, and
harnessed to a caravan of wagons a steed
whose muscles are steel, whose nerves
arc brass, and whose heart is tho fire of
red hot Lehigh. He has subjugated the
winds aud waves to his will, aud even the
lightnings of heaven become his messen
gers, snd leap sway to do his bidding.
The design of labor-saving inventions is
to bring the powers of the mind to the
relief of the hands, thus providing leisure
for aoeial intercourse, mental cultivation
and mliekms duty.
