The Republican party can do nothing
hotter, in view of the Presidential con
test, than to plant itself firmly on the
ground of reforms. Wc want a radical
refotm to tlvj civil service, the officials
to devote themselves exclusively to the
pubic sendee, without any regard
whatever to party qpneerns. We want
a reform of the tdrrency laws, the in
terests of tho country requiring only
gold and paper money, the two to be
interchange «b!e over any counter, at
par, and at sight. Wc want an adminis
tration so offident that every man will
be protected in all Ins legitimate dntcr-
csts, while the wrongdoers will be
equally sure of speedy punishment. For
our next President it is not uecessarjrto
select a prominent politician, but a re
spectable man of character and olfioiency.
The Democratic party, as is shown in
New York, begins to understand this,
and the Republican party cannot do a
wise! thing than to forestall the other
side- In that case it would sweep the
whole country as with a broom, while a
persistent attachment to dead issues is
inseparable from disgrace and deleat.
