quired is to bo appropriated from the
treasury. The bill goes upon the
theory that as the company was iu-
cjrporated by act of Congress, ns
thousands of freedmeu were led to en
trust their savings to the company by
the persuasions of authorized agents
of the government, and that as it was
through Ill-advised legislation of Con
gress that good and ample securities
fur deposits in said company were ex
changed for valueless and speculative
securities, that good faith requires
that the governmeut should make
good what the freedmen have thus
lost.

and will probably be able to adjourn
on next Tuesday. Wo are glad to see
that our immediate Representatives
are locking carefully to tbo interests
of our county in making provision for
tbo payment of the past Indebtedness
of tbs county and past due sohool
claims. ^
Mr. Hutson has Introduced a bill to
limit the attendance of jurors on tho
sessions of the Circuit Court to one
week, and we hope to see It become
an act. Opposition on the score of
•"Cheap John” eoonomy Is being made
to it, but we hope that Mr. Hutson
will remember that the people are on
bis side and will gratefully pay the
little additional omt of a return to a
rule of our hooorc&iMMt.
Mr. Haskell has resigned his seat on
the Supreme Bench and becomes
President of the Charlotte, Columbia
and Augusta Railroad. Hon. Samuel
McGowan* of Abbeville, a gallant
soldier,.able lawyer and accomplished
gentleman becomes Us successor and
Associate Justice Mclver has beeu
elected Chief Justice.
The question of the State debt has
been practically settled In accordance

by the appropriation of 9469,000 for
the payment of the interest of 1680,

talents and dauntless courage, illustra
ted on every Held when* Hsgood’s
Brigade was iu the van. (Rut of this,

ho becomes, undoubtedly, one of the
best and most successful planters In
our couuty. During tho turbulent
days, marked by the Ellentou and
other riots, he was at once a control

when Radicalism was “dying so very
hard,” and striving, with ull the des
