Dr. Lovick Pierce, father of liishop
Gei. F. Pierce, and the pioneer of
Southern Methodism, died at the rcsi*
dcncc of Bishop Pierce, in this place,
last evening. His health had not been
good for some time, and ns he was in
bis ninety-fifth year, his death was not
unexpected.

•contains five columns of telegraphic
dispatches of thn disasters at sea dur
ing the heavy winds of last week. The
steamer Falcon, from Baltimore for
Charleston, loaded with merchandise,
was struck by a schooner and sunk
'i-na the night <*f the 8th lust. No liYes
were lost. The cargo was valued at
<30.000, but muck of that may be re
covered.
~ On the 7th another collision bet ween
the steamer Champion and the Lady
Octavla took place near the Capes of
t he Delaware, and twenty-four of the
Chamiriou's crew were lost
The schooner Petrel was wrecked in
a hurricane on the 3d Inst., and fifteen
out of twenty-one of her crew lost, in
cluding the captain and both mates.

It is encouraging for our people to
know that the cotton sold in Augusta
during the past week, as compared
with toe corresponding week of last
year, owing to the advance in prices,
make a difference in favor of the
planter of about ono hundred thou
sand dollars. The amount of cotton
sold in October this year in the South
ern Slates will net our people Jxom
eight to ten million dollars more than
tho sales for October last year. Tbia
Is not from the larger sales, but from
the increased price for c-jUan. Specu
lators have done some benefit to the
South this year. This showing is

Anderson.—On last Monday night,
a double cabin occupied by a negro
family on the fa t in of Mrs. Cynthia
Glenn, was accidentally destroyed by
fire, together with one child and all
the contents There are thlity-oue
paupers In the poor-house.
Fairkirld.—The Wlnnsboro National
Bank took in for deposit last week up
wards of $70,000 In actual money
A lire on the 8th Inst, in Wlnusboro’
destroyed a colored church, three
houses and a gin and mill. The de
pot camo very near being consumed.

roan about 19 years of ago, was killed
by the down passenger train on the
South Carolina Railroad on last Satur
day night. He was at Beevesville
about dark, at which time he left for
Itis home, eight miles below Branch-
vllle, on horseback.

will leave on the 15th for Kansas
An unprovoked attack was made last
week upon W. R Parker, a colored
man residing at Fair I lay, by a band
of Georgia outlaws; but after calling
at Parker’s bouse, and finding him
absent, they returned to Georgia.
Lancaster.—A number of persons
who went to Texts last year are com
ing back to old Lancaster .Mr.
Ambrose Martin’s gin-house with Its
entire contents, consisting of fourteen
bales of cotton, two hundred bushels
of corn and fifty bushels wheat were
entirely destroyed by tiro on Monday
night.
Lexinotoh.—A bodv of men, fifty In
number, mounted and armed, went to
the court-house on Friday night last
for the purpose of taking out and
hangioff tho negro confined in jail
charged with murdering young Hook

and premises of Miss Susan Dorn, a
maiden lady, residing about one mile
from Edgefield C. H., by three negtoes,
one of whom, and the ringleader, sbe
recognised as Giles Walker, a notori
ously bad character, but who made
hU escape and has succeeded thus far
in eluding the vigilance of tbs officers.
