regard to the assessments put upon the

r.nd Banner went Bo far as to say that
if Gen. llagsod was nominated for Gov«
emor of the State Abbeville would not
support him. This remark, in our
opinion, was unwise and uncalled for, n.s
the attack upon pen. I Ingood by that
paper wan unwarranted, unprovoked
and unmerited. In regard to tbo taxes,
Gen. llagood only did bis duty, as any
one acquaints! with his high order of
honor might have expected him to do,
and the blame should have been placed
upon the Board and not make him the
“seapesgrtce” brrffctr stns. As to Ab<
Ireviflo not supporting him furjGoveruor
if ho is nominated, that is “buncombe
and nonsense,” and a reflection upon
the people of a noble county, inferior in
no respect to any in the State, for it
will stand to the nominees of the Demo
cratic party. Wc think it is too early to
Bpeak of any one for Governor.' Several
gentlemen have, however, been spoken
of, any of whom would suit us, but no
one any more than GVn. liugoud, for lie
is pure, talented and patriotic, and pos*
sessed of the greatest administrative
ability of any one tu the State.—Lauretis-

five changes are rcqtured to make the
United States tsetmte i» tie in 1881.'
Thurman wifi be succeeded by a Repub
lican, but there will be a stand-off with
the Democratic Senator who will bo cho'en
to succeed Senator Bruce. The gains
which the Bepublicans hope to make are
in the successors to“Sctmtors Keruan of
A'cw York, Eaton of Connecticut, Mc
Donald of Indiana, Randolph of New
Jersey, and Wallace of Pennsylvania.
If they make gains in all these cases the
Senate will be equally divided, and for
the Democrats to have a majority Kel-'
logg would have to bo ousted. Davis,
of Illinois, is not included in the caku-
luti n, because it is not known where he
stands when the two parties are so close
ly divided.— Hus/tuig/on Star.
