BlockyiHq, Barnwell county, South
Carolina, and have the honor to submit
the following facts for your considera
tion; I lind that Mr. Frederick Nix,
Jr., the present Postmaster at lilack-
ville, Sooth Carolina, is a native of
Barn well county of that Stale. ’ He has
idway* resided in Barnwell eomity, ex
cept while ttmpararily residing in Co
lumbia, serving as a member of the
South Carolina Legislature, lie is,
aud has been, a RepuLlfcan of great in-,
•fluenee, and, in matters not ofu political
type, has wielded a potency. In evi
dence of this I migbjt niomiou the elec
tion pertaining to the removal of the
c>uttty seat from Black vide to Burn-.
weU, on which occasion his zeal and
energy won fti him “from the piTjde of
Barnwell an elegant goii-mountul cane,
which Is now in his posses dun, and has
the following iutcriplion :
—FREDrRICK fTtx.
From the Lwdlngof barn well tto inty, 8. C,
Honor to whom honor is due. ’
I am informed thw cane was present
ed by Col. William Duncan. a leading
lawyer of Barnwell, in behalf of a num
ber of the first white Indies of Biniwell
county
On another occasion of a simi
lar character lie was presented with an
elegant Bible, h*h> from the ladies of
Barnwell, beuiog the following inscrip
tion : ,

During the campaign preceding the
overthrow of llepublicanism in 8outh
Carolina Nsx took a most active and iu-
Jliuching position, and^ it was prior to
that time the incidents I have related
occurred, ami prior to , the iiiaugurarh n
of what is popularly Mid nationally
known as the “reign of terror,” and
since wliicji time Kcpuhlicttnjsm bas net
been tolerated. Tho few white Bepub-
lieaus who remain, unable, from poverty
or other considerations, to go clsewliyre,
'arc treated like felons, “ticket "Cf leave
men,” while with the blacks it is regard-
edaa a criminal presumption to claim to
be a Kepubl’can. Nix not being the
man to desert the camp in timo of dan
ger, has stood by his colors in a simp'e,
frank and manly manner, which has
rendered him so obnoxious to the ultra
Democrats that n short time since his
brother, who is a carpenter, was applied
to by Nix, who is also a carpenter by
trade, for work, which was given him.
Shortly after his engagement the brother
was notified that he would have to forfei;
his contract if ho did not at once dis
charge his brother Frederick.
1 deem it necessary to preface my re-
-port with the above facts to enable you
to fully &[prcciate the condition or af
fairs in aud about Blackviile, and the
seutiuicnt entertained towards Republi
cans, if not by the majority, by those
who role in the county.
At the time the shooting of Nix oc
curred—which was on September 10,
187It, at about noon, and immediately
after the departure of the assistant post
master to dinner—while Nix was alone,
and abort the only hour in the day
when he is alone, showing that William?
awaited his opj/ortunity—one David
(jlover called at the general delivery
window and inquired for letters. The
Postmaster immediately turned to his
case, which was directly back of him,
and was engage I in an examination of
his letters before answering tho itiqurv,
nijd while so engaged he heart! what he
supposed to be the click of" a pistol trig

what it was, and was about half way
round when he received through his
antt and across his breast a bullet from
a pistol held iu the hands of Luther
Williams, which was fired through the
general delivery window over the shoul
ders of Glover, and which would ncces
sarily have been a fatal
dose quarters but for the quick inirt‘0
meat of Nix on hearing the clickVf the
pistol. Nix had uot up to tlyrinoveiucnt
of shooting seen or evetrheard Williams,
and not a word, kid passed between
them. Nix, wljo'nas frequently heard
threats thaU if he look possesion of the
post njjico huilife would pay'the forfeit,
aud imho was iu consequence naturally
anticipating danger, had u put o' in his

It is a siuuular but retrailcnhlo fact
that with two or mere ncwspkpers in the
conniy, neither of them has taken any-
notice of or made any comment what
ever on the affair; aud strange, too, that
no action was taken by the grand jury
of the county court, which wns^in ses

effort of any character appears to Jyive
been* made to apprehend Williams, who
lives within a short distnnca ol town.

Nothing but the most solemn assur
auecs on our pert that all information
would he considered strictly confidential
could elicit a word fr<*n them.
In conclusion, I desire to stale that
since the shooting, while making some
purchases in a store, Nix was assaulted
by a party of men who, in language
more forcible than elegant, seemed de
termined to bring about a difficulty,
which wits only averted by the proprie

of their way.*
