Cotton Cars on Fire.
On Thursday afternoon as four ears
loaded with old cotton were standing
on the turnout at Bineut h’s 'Station oh
the South CurolinA Railroad, the cot
ton became ignited by s spark from a
passing locomotive, and blazed up like
tinder. The bnruing bales were thrown
overboard into tbo pool of water that
was fortunately near by, and rbFUTe
soon extinguished. Ode hundred and_
nineteen bales were more or less in
jured .some being only slightly scorched
while others were partially consumed.
The cotton was from Atlanta, ou its
way to this port for shipment to New

do not concur. This section of coun
try is adapted to cotton, and it pays
our farmers better to raise it than
anything else. He has to take the
risk of short props; but our cotton
crops are more generally successful
than any other.
Our contemporary, tho Abbeville
Frees and Banner, calls for a reduc
tion of from fifty to twenty-five cents in
the gate fees of the Abbeville Fair,and
says : ,4 We want a big crowd, and the
only way to have a large attendance is
to-reduce the gate foes to a reasona
ble price. Let families come in at the

a single person.” We reproduce
the suggestion for the benefit of our
Fair authorities.
