It is by such means that Texas bus Increased her white population three-fold since the war; and now she is the first, and thus far the only Southors State to see, aud promptly seize thto opportu uity to obtain English immigrants. Already a colony of ninety have landed in New York, holding through tickets from Liverpool to Baa Antonia, Texas, at very cheap rates, and these are only the fore-runners of numbers that will be induced to follow, by the energetic influence of Texan agents at work lu England. A combination of land ovi uers can easily arrange cheap rates of passage with the National or An chor Line from Liverpool to New York, and the Charleston Line, from thence To Charleston Tor a number of immigrants, and .by-offqpiujg them greater advantages than unsettled Texas, can turn a veiy largo portion of This human stream to our State. Piompt energy, intelligently directed, io all that is neoded. • lu addition to, and IrrespcctiVC'of such combination and action of land owners, the State should organize an Immigration and Agricultural Bureau, at the next meeting of tho Llglslature, whose duties it should bo, among others, to register all lands iu the the State for sale ; disseminate Infor mation abroad, aud actually appolut agents In England, or send them there, to Induce {migration, and bring over colonies, and such colonies could be settled upon lands that have been, or may bo forfeited to the State for taxes. If the people of South Carolina allow this present opportunity to pass unim proved, they will prote that the acou satlona of indolence, and absence ol’ cnterpiise, so frequently made by tho North, are not undeserved. If our land owners continue struggling in poverty, weighed down by taxes on uncultivated lands, they will bavb only themselves to blame. This is tbeir opportunity to rdnvigorate the 8tate t and start her on a career of prosper!; ty, such as sbe has never before expe rienced. Our people have it now in their power to double the white popu lation of the State within a very few years, by adding to Its numbers of tho best immigrants Europe produces.
