I'rincc Jerome Napoleon Las akvays
had a remarkable resemblance to bis
uncle, the first Emperor, and lather a
touching story is told concerning this ^Mdoe
resemblance. One of the survivors of
Napoleon’s Old Guards who returned to
his provincial home after Waterloo
always refused to believe that his Em
peror was dead, and insisted that he
would return one day to restore France
her lost glory. Many years after it so
chanced that Prince Napoleon had for
some reason to go through this town
at night, and some of the townspeople,
thinking to play off a jest upon the old
soldier, came to him and told him that
his dream had come true; that the
Emperor hud indeed returued, and was
at that moment passing through the
principal street. Wild with excitement
thereteran rushed off to tho spot where
the£Impenal escort was" slowly making
its way through tho shouting crowd.
The glare of torches shone upon the
soldiers and upon a bareheaded mau
looking out of a carriage window, a man
with the face of the conqueror of Auster-
ittz. The old soldier gave a wild cry of
delight, “Vive I’Kmpercur!'’ and foil
down fainting. When they came to
raise him they found ho was dead
he died happy in the belief that he once
again looked upon the face of his old
commander.

TRe Rapacious Mississippi.—The
town of Covington, Iowa, situated ou a
bond of tho Mississippi, bids fair to
soon disappear beneath the current of
tho Father of Waters. The ground on
which the court house stood a year ago
is now covered by many feet of swiftly
flowing water. The cutting away is done
by fits and starts. One day the current
seta inshore and slices off thirty or forty
feet, and perhaps a week elapses before
any further damage occurs. Then about
a half donn buildings arc moved back
some thirty feet, and tho next land on
which they stood has all gone. The citi-
xens have'tricd to moor tree* and logs
to tho bank in the hope of forming a
barrier for the flood, but the current is
so swift and the water so deep that all
those attempts have failed. To give an
idea of what the town ofCovington has
Buffered in the past five years, the case
of the ferryhouse and principal hotel
may be instanced' Two years ago there
were COO feet of land between the build
ings and the river bank ; now you can
toss a stone out of the hotel window
into the river, and the buildings are be
ing put onj-ollcrs fer removal.
She Knew the Feet —A man who
was journeying down the Mississippi
with his wife thought he would enjoy
the luxury of shaving and shampooing.
While this was going on ho concluded
to surprise his wife, and at his request,
hair, eyebrows and whiskers were chang
ed from a fiery red to raven blackness.
He hastened to the state-room, but was
met at the door by his spoase, outraged
by the intrusion of a stranger as she
supposed, and admittance refused. He
called himself her* husband; she said
he was an imposter^ He attempted to
explain ; it was useless!’ A crowd
gathered round and the laugh became
general. At last in his perplexity the
hoaxer exclaimed ; “Mary, look at my
feet 1” One glance at the pedal ap-
peudagee assured her. “Yes, John,”
she said, “I know them feet. They can
