Eoe, F, A. 8., U Landoa Time*.)
When the number representing any
given year is even and exactly divisible
by throe, that year is the middle one o
throe cold and. tqgt Summers.
When the number representing the
year is odd nod divisible by three, then
that yetr is the middle of a triad of day
end hot Summers.
Fox example, 1860 is oven and dU
visible by throe, and the prevailing char
acteristic of the three years, 1859, I860,
1861, was wet or wet and cohl ; and
again, 1863 is odd and divisible by
three, and everybody remembers 1862,
1863 and 18C4, as blight, hot and dry
Summers.' '.T'
Taking now a range of twenty-seven
years oVer which my own personal ob.
scrvations extend, and applying the
ruloa just given, the wot and cold triads
were 1853 ’55, 1859 ’61, 1865 ’67,
1871 73 and 1877 ’79, while the dry
and hot triads were 1856 ’58, 1862 ’64,
1868 71 and 1874 76; and without
claiming that no single year broke loose
from this very order of fcasons, I fear-
lessly maintain that til the markedly
wet or dry Summers of the past twenty-
seven years fall accurately within some
wot or dry period as given above; so
that no very wet year falls in what
should have been a dry period, nor any
very dry in what hypothetically was a
wet period.
The number 1881 is odd and divl-in-
ble by three, and, if there is anything in
my theory, that year ought to be the
middle one in a triad of hot and dry
Summers. I am looking forward, there
fore, with much confidence to a good
Summer iu 1880, followed by two siinU
lirly good ones in 1881 and 1882, and
for the sake of every interest in the
country, I earnestly hope my cxpccta
tion may not bo disappointed.
The <tac«tlon of Baptinna.

A protracted discussion of the ques
tion of baptirm took place early yester
day morning under a window of the
Observer office, between two colored
theologiana, the one a Baptist brother
with an axe under his arm, and the
other a Presbyterian sister, with a red
handkerchief around her head. The
controversy grew so loud and heated as
to attract the attention of all passers.
The brother stood flat-footed on the
passage of Scripture which says that
Christ went down into the water when
baptised by John, and the sister's reply
.to this was that anyhow the Bible
didn’t say that he went down under the
water, The brother paused for just
owe minute to scratch his head, and the
light of triumph beamed in the sister’s
eye os alio took breath to ssy that the
wafer business didn't amount to much
any way, but that the sure enough
baptism woe by the Holy Ghost and
with fire. Bight here the Baptiah
brother flew the track, and stepping be
yond the boundary of legitimate dis
cussion ungaliantly told the sister that
when “they’’ undertook to bitytizo her
with fire she would run. Wtth indigna
tion in her face and Voice and manner,
the sister picked up her skirts tnd
marched away, shaking her head and
muttering all manner of imprecations
against “dem Baptises,” while the
brother held the field and bowed down
and slapped his leg with his disengaged
hand, shifted his quid of tobacco to the
other side of his mouth and laughed im
moderately.—Charlotte Observer.

Married of Horseback.—Quite a
a novel wedding took place on Tuesday
of last week on the public road, near
Lyon’s creek, in Calvert county. The
contracting parties wore Mr. Horace
Tell and a Miss Jones, both of Anne
Arundel county. The officiating minis-
tor, Rev. Mr. Shoaf, of Calvert county,
was requested by the groomsman to
■tart from his home at 7 o'clock on the
abort named morning, and he would do
likewise, and the point on the road
where they would meet should be made
memorable by a novel wedding. This
arrangement was carried out, and the
bride and groom, on Horseback, met
the reverend gentleman, and in the
public road, seated on horseback, under
the sheltering branches of a wide-spread
ing oak, the happy couple were made
man and wife.—Virginia paper.

.Lamp Lighted bt Lightning.—
During the prevalence of a storm a few
evenings since, tho telegraph operator at
King’s Mountain went to his office os
. usual after tea, and turned on the key of
the instrument. His lamp, a glass one,
vru Bitting within a few inches of the
plug, and as'he turned to get a match to
light it, there come a brilliant flash of
Bgbtaing, a flame bunt all over the in-
atrament, tod the lamp was lighted in
an instant. Tho occurrence was vtit'
■eased by two other persons, besides the
operator himself. The lamp was not in
jured in the slights* degree. Had it not
bean entirely of glass, a non-conductor,
the result would doubtless have been
different, as the operator would have had
ooeasion to know.—Charlotte Observer.
