the boy either dies or gets well. It has
been his custom to tahe his fiddle and

“Dor night vhos dark und lonely.

Vhen Henry Hammerdelmer’s boy
Der doctor said must die.”
There was a general uprising to do the
poet honor as he finished the first verse,
and before the enthusiasm had subsided
he was out on the street with a broken
head. He was the only one disturbing
the peace as the offioer came along, and
was therefore the only one brought i».
“Carl Schmidt,” said his Honor, after
hearing the particulars, ” let poetry alone.
It is the rpad to the poor-house. While
all of us love to read poetry, none of us
want to pay for it.”
“First dey proke ray fiddle, und den
dey proke my head,” replied Carl as he
felt of hie scalp.
“And if you continue in the poetry
trade you’ll find ten men itching to
break yoar head where one will be will

and resolve to pay more attention to
cube root and less to poetry.”

A sensation was created at govern
ment headquarters hero by Silas M.
Patterson, son of ex. Senator Patterson,
of South Carolina, who arrived beie
some weeks ago on his return from Cali
fornia, put up in grand style at the Pal
mer House, and introduced himself at
the Customhouse with personal letters,
from John Sherman, Charier Pevens,
G. W. McCreary, D. M. Key, John R.
Hawley, and others, well known in
Washington. These loiters placed him
in the good graces of Wm. Henry Smith,
Collector Harvey, and all Government
people. He was taken by the hand and
amiled upon, wined, dined and toasted a
la Grant in China. All went merry un.
til one day be appeared at the Custom,
house, explained to Wm. Henry Smith
how he had lost $1,800 betting on the
wrong horse at the races, was dead broke,
expected a draft from Secretary Sher
man, also from pere Patterjm&Jtnd in
the meantime wished a temporary loan
-on some family diamonds which, luckily,
he had with him. He was fortunate,
and left a handful of diamonds among
the Government officials, obtaining a
three to four thousand dollar loan on
them. Next appeared one Warren
Knight, claiming to be a diamond bro
ker, who had given the . diamonds to
Patterson to sell and return the motey,
which he did not return. He secured a
warrant fer Patterson’s arrest. The
latter wanted his diamonds back to save
himself from disgrace. Patterson, it is
said, has been*bounced from the Pal
mer House, owing a large bill. Knight
is said to be connected with a gang of
thieves, and Patterson is suspected of
being in collusion with him in the con-
fidenee game to rob the Government
employees.

The boy stood on the backyard fence,
whence all bnt hit? had fled. The fiumes
that lit hit father’s barn, shown just
above the shed. One bunch of crack
ers in his hand, two others in-his bat,
with piteous accents load he cried, “I
never thought of that.” A bunch of
crackers to the tail of one small dog he
tied. Tbe dog in anguish sought the
barn, and mid its ruin did die. The
sparks flew wide and hot, they lit upon
that brat; they fired the crackers in his
l anl and eke thoee in his hat. Then
came' a burst of rattling sound—the
boy? When was he gone? Ask of
the winds that far around strewed bits of
■ meat and bone, and seraps of clothes,
and balls, and tope, and nails, and hooks,
and yarn, ike relics of that dreadful hoy
i his father’s barn.
