The Presiding Elder of the Morfreet' boro’ district of the Virginia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church Sooth, which includes about a dozen coun ties in the northeastern section of North Carolina, tells the following remarkable snake stor/ upon the authority ofonoof the pious itinerants under his ecclesiasti cal direction. There can be no doubt of its entire truth, strange as the narra- tive ia, and it suggests the existence of many a mystery ie the economy of the lower orders of creation which has llius ■ _ V *‘ pi • V - far eluded the most minute and search • iug scientific investigation. When the minister was a boy he went out one day with his bow and arrows and ioitered leisurely along the roadside, testing his markmanship upon various objects. Com-, ing to where a shallow brook. cuHed hi the South a branch, crossed the high • Way, he obaerved a snake, of the deadly spcctcs'.knowg ns the moccasin, basking in the sunlight. ^ He shot nil his arrows nt the formidable reptile, wounding hin^ in several places, and repeated the pas time till the snake was, to nil appear* artce, dead. Seeing n party of colored persons approaching at a distance, the boy took the wounded snake in hi* hands and laid him in a coil in the mid dle of the path, and then hid himself in the bushes to see what the negroes would do when they came to the spot. In a few moments another snake of the same kind glided out from the thicket and went up to his wounded fellow and ex- * <fik' amined him. Then darting back into the covert be returned with some leaves in his month, pieces of which he placed carefully upon the wounds, making them adhere like plasters. The apparently dead saakc immediately began to revive, end coon recovered his power of locomo tion and .crawled away into the woods. Have'thelAakes doctors ? This incident dooks that twajr. It is a remar> kable slretum, thnt rests horizontally in a steep bhUT'df volcanic matter which flanks tbe eastern eade of Smith’s Creek Valley. The etwrtum of steatite is from three to ton Teet ia diameter. It is easily werkod, and the fanners, cattle men aud sheep-herders in that region all use the natural article for washing purposes. When the steatite is first dug from tko stratum it:looks precisely like immense maaeevofimottled Castile soap. A few days ago ilAofessor Stewart, of Virginia (Sty, •received a sample of the •Off. prepared by a (firm in Elko, who tiave undertaken : to introduce it. Noth ing U added to the mineral hut a trifle more alkali and some scenting extracts. Its detersive qualities arc as powerful as those of any manufactured soap.
