The latest gossip about the next Pros'
idenoj is that Senator Windonu, of Min>
nesota, is to be coached aa a Rcpablican
candidate in the erect that Gen. Grant
declines to go into the contest for the
place. It is thought bj Grant’s friends
that he irQl decline to run if there is a
scramble for the nomination, as the in
dications now are that there will be, bj
other leading Republicans. It is in this
view of the case that Scooter Windom’s
name is mentioned. The quill-drivers
hare it that a few days before Congress
adjourned Senator Conkling entertained
at dinner a dozen or more prominent
Republican leaders. The New York
Senator asked each one of his gu<uts,
who would be the strongest candidate in
case of Gen. Grant’s declination ; that
is, who would poll tb$ full Republican
rote and. at the same time, not excite
the antagonist of the other aspiring can
didates. The story goes that not one of
his guests could name any person who
could fill the bill, whereupon Senator
Conkling said ; "I have a candidate ;
it ik Win. Windom, of Minnesto. He
eoald poll the vote of the whole party,
woald not make enemies among the lead
ers if nominated, and would come to the
nominating convention with the solid
strength of the Northwest his sup-
port.” As S«nator Conkling *od Sena
tor Blaine are not yet on any u'O good
terms, and aa Senator Blaine has al
ways had his strongest following in thd
Northwest, this goasip, if true, would
indicate that the New York Senator
proposed to get in his work early to kill
the Blaine statesman off.

- The Writlas Telegraph.
The writing telegraph, which repro
duces the messages sent in almost per
fect fee-simile of the sender, has been
fitted up between Wartarloo and Work
ing, England, a distance of some 26
mites, and, according to the Echo, has
been working very well. The instru
ment itself is too recent an invention to
have yet reached even an approach to
perfection ; but the defects made evident
in practical working have so far been
vemedied, and it is said that a useful im
provement will shortly be available.
One great advantage is that the instu-
ment is quite automatic nt the receiving
end, and dees not require the constant
attendance of a clerk. It writes the
message on a roU of paper, and they can
be cut off and sent to their destinations
as opportunity offers. This is an im
portant point, because it is well known
that the time wasted in calling and in
obtaining the attention of the receiver
for exceeds that required for the actual
sendbig of the message.

Boston, July 18.—Soon after 4
o'clock this afternoon a storm of terrifik
violence burst over this city, doing great
damage to lifo and property. The
schooner Myrtle, of Charleston, having
on board six persons, four women and a
man and boy, was capsized off Birt Is
land, and all excepting the man were
drowned. The damage thronghout the
city oan hardly be ascertained at piesent,
but it will probably amount to many
thousands of dollars.

A singular story of supposed crime is
current ia the peaceful village of Gut-
tenburg, N. Y. A former resident of
the place, at the present time under sen
tenoe of death in Glasgow, Scotland, for
raurdaring his wife and one of bis chil
dren, is now believed to have commit
ted a similar crime when in this country.
His house at Guttenberg was burned to
the ground, and bones were found in
the ruins which were supposed to be
those of the entire family , but now that
it has been discovered thst he merely
disappeared at the time, and has since
shown such s desperate character, it is
believed that this seeming conflagration
only concealed a plural murder. There
are circumstances which strengthen this
view.
