CUJuly 7. ^ Dear PEorLE: No doubt your read ers would be interested in a few items from our soncewbat benighted little town, as In the day of ’76 when all de pended upon courage and faith, we claim to have held (be banner and planted it immovably upon the eolid platform that bore us all up to a stan dard when the vigilant are atftl mov ing on ; nod although we are altualed at the extremity of our county we are in enterprise steadily and surely mov ing on. Oa the night of the 5th Inst, we had' another entertainment at Burke’s Hall by the Midway Dramatic Troupe, of which Mr. GovaU H. Simms is manager, and under whose skillful training we think his troupe has ( p oor ♦* A Thrlvlaff School. ~ Dear Editor : Please allow me space In your cblumns to note some of the pleasing incidents In the lower section of this county. Prominent among these were the closing exercises of Miss Cal houn’s school on the 20th ult. This youag lady is truly a most thorough, practical and efficient tocher. From early morning until 2 o’clock p. m- her pupils followed, with marked precis Jon, the footprints of education, through spelling, English grammar, history, arithmetic, algebra, famtyjor science, rhetoric, composition and Lat tfl, interspersed With music anff songB; all being conducted with a system, grace and ease, which betrayed rare capacities In theTpIf teachcr. It is in deed refreshing to witness boys and girls exhibiting such proficiency in aS* sending tho road of science, even m« sic receiving a due share of attention. The examination being ended, dinner was announced, and be assured, dear Editor, If you had witnessed the re sultant groaning* of those who were fed from the abundant table; you would conclude that the dear matrons of that section had bech thoroughly graduated ib this department of learn ing. Dinner being ended all wete again drawn to the academy to par take of the condiments wisely pre pared to aid groaning humanity In dl gestlng this meal, Cobelstiog in piano music, songs, compositions, Speeches and laughter. All of tbo pulpUa die their part so well that it would be in vidious to discriminate. Suffice it td say, that It required no strain of the imagination to see in the not far dis tant future some of Barnwell’s noble statesmen and matrons erainating from these Utile boys and girls. Master J. J. Hogg literally brought down the house on "The Poor Old Maid,’’ for th* burst of laughter had hardly subsided when cries came from every quarter, “Give us again ’The reached almost, if not quite, perfection in the art so difficult to.master. The entertainment was well attended by a number of prominent citizens, all of whom were loud In their approval of the manner In which the entertainment was conducted, and unanimously pro nounced It a complete success. Mr. Simms deserves great credit. He camo here and selecting from our humblo citizens a few whose tal ents were perceptible only to the eye of one able to judge of such talent* He has organized and trained a troupe of amateurs that we venture to say will compare favorably with any in the State. We learn that Mr. Simms in tends making Uits his study and has chosen It as his profession and we think that we can assure the public of his ultimate success. Feeling proud of the fact that here was the home of that great Poet that drew the world In admiration, and feeling proud of the birthplace of this offspring, bid ding so fair to win a glorious name for himself, unaided and alone, we beg to have this recorded upon your pages and preserved that we stand sponsor for bis success. —~ b. On* of the speakers complimented Miss Calhoun by saying that he bad wit nessed examinations In cities, towns and villages, but had never witnessed one desarving more theencomiuoo? suc cess than did this.
