Mr. Editor :—Thursday last was the
day set Apart for the picnic of the
Methodist Sunday-School which took
place at a beautiful shady grove within
the cotifiues cf the village near the
church.
The committee of arrangements
which was composed of scholars of the
school, were indefatigable id the duties
assigned them.of having the grounds
prepared and of placing benches on
the ground for the accommodation of
their friends.
A long table had been erected, which-
was filled with the most tempting eat
ables. Suffice me to say that there
was an abundance of everything good,
all of which was relished by the large
number present. There was an insuf
ficiency of plates and forks, and many
ludicrous modes were resorted to, to
obtain some of the good things. One
young friend of ohrs captured an ex
cellent dish of custard, which served
him also to hold the balance of his
rations. Another was engaged with
feeding himself with his fingers, the
ladles, of course, having been provided
for first. The gentleragg were assidu
ous in tbeir attention.
Various amueements*were Indulged
In. Among the boys there Was foot
racing and jack racing, many of larger
growth good humoredly taking part
f or the amusement of the spectators.
“ Drop tbe Handkerchief’’ was a game
for tha girls, assisted by their staid
gallants. Cloquet was a favorite pas
time with the ladies and gentlemen.
The boys played soldief to the iuiinit-
ble drum beating of Master Baldwin,
Master Mouzon being base drummer.
The marching and military tearing of
the joung soldiers were excellent, and
in the course of ttsae when they will be
called upon to take tbeir place In ranke
with their elder brethren la the prac
tice.
Later in the afterooob, Mr. Pizer, of
Philadelphia, made his appearance
on tbe ground ; and as he is generally
known that he is an excellent perform
er on the guitar, be agreeably enter
tained us with many Selections of
comic anu seatiQtCulal songs. H any
soft words were spoken on that day,
we have no positive knowledge of it.
The day was indeed sn enjoyable one.
The weather was charming, and every
one expressed themselves well pleased
with the arrangements.
We wish jhe school a prosperous
career, and trost it may always cqm-

The Way to Tell Whether
chine Will Pay or Not.
a Ma-
Consider the first cost, the probable cost
of repair; then how long it w.H last. Then
begin to run up the profits you expect to re
ceive by its use, and you will see whether it
will pay or not.
For example, we will run up the cost and
profits of one of TtKILE’S LATEST IM
PROVED EIRE-PROOF CONDENSER AND
PERFECT DUSTER. The cost of one for a
40 saw gin is }45. This Includes the at-
tajhing of jt to the gin, and proving whether
Tt wifi do or noTTT TVc tvftt put down 81" per
year for repairs. Wo will now run up what
little we may expect to receive by its uae:
The Condenser takes the place of your waste
ful lint rooms, which range in cost from $10
to <20, saying nothing altout the much
needed space they take Up.. Now put down
the next thing they are especially good for,
•and that is to burn out when you are least
expecting it Now, what docs it coit.me?
$500 or $1,000, besides, 1 had a good deal
of cotton atid a great tnuhy seed bhfned,
also five dr ten bales bekngiug lo my ous,
tomefi. Thby too have to share the risk
and loss of this mistrable lint-room arrange
ment, and are entitled to no insurance.
Nett, put down your immense loss in dusty
Cotton. Ycntnay conclude that dusty cotton
sells lower, but weighs higher. In this you
arc badly mistaken. The matter in th#
earth or..sand which gives storm cotton a
black, dingy cut is us light as a feather.
You can prove it. Go to a block, dusty
place in the road in a dry time, and kick thb
sand about, dnd you will see It rise and float
off in the air. li is lighter than air. You
will not get lieh as quick bv its weight as
you will get poor by it|l looks. Ydiir top
cotton wilt get badly soiled ia tha boll iu a
dry, windy eiiae ia this way. To prwrfc
what wg sometimes lose by dusty cotton', 1
will produce the conitleate ef ll. Red, Esq 7
who had a bale dusted by the Condenser,
and one ginned in a lint-rooln, In order to
test the difference: *
Wixuson, S; C., Sept. S;
J. L. ToioLM—Dear Sir: I did as I told you
about theooiton. I hauled the (wo bales to
Aiken yesterday. The cotton was a’l
gathered as near as i could get it. Jafus,
owner of lint-room gin, must have had an
an awfully misty lint room from ginning
dusty cotton. 1 believe it looked worse sL
ter than before it was ginned. You bent
him badly. I got 13) cents for his bale grid
14 cents for yours. I lost just enough to
pay for the ginning of one bale, $3.7fi. 1 bv-
iiefe in your duster.
Yours respectfully, II. RED,
Now, let us see what can be a-wed by it in
one year, supposing every gin to use one. ll
is estimated from reliable sources that there
is ar> average ef 125 gins burned acciden
tally throughout the bouth annually. Sup
pose them, including their contenta, to av
erage in vahie $1,000. Here is $126,000
in one year from this quarter. Now, It will
not be considered •aaggcratioii in cotton
manufacturing circles to estimate that one-
fourth of the whole erop is damaged by dost,
and wc will average this loss at one-quarter
of a cent per pound. IVe generally raise
from four to five million boles per year.
Suppose the dusty bales to average 400 lbs,
and the whole crop four and a half millions.
Here is one mifiton oue hundred and twenty-
five thousand dollkr* prorc saved that would
have gone iftto the bauds of the manufactu
rer, under the plea of dusty or storm cot ton.
They have machinery to clear it of dust,
therefore, they make more money oh R than
on clean Cetton They ge it in many casps
from $5 to $10 less per bale, * hen in reali
ty it is as good as any colton gathered.
