The Court of Common Pleas was in
session only one day (Thursday). A
considerable amount of business was
transacted. This short session of the

was patient, .fair and courteous, and

A Word to the Corpulent.
Instead of regarding obesity as an
abnormal condition, many people have
erroneously considered it as an evi-
- dence of health, and any agent that
reduces fat Is thereforo at once sus
pected of being injurious. Starting to
reason from the false position that fat
is an evidence of health, it is not sur
prising that they should, very natur
ally, fail Into the error of supposing
that an agent possessing properties
capable of reducing corpulency would
prove injuripus to the health. Rea
soning, however, from the rational ba
sis, that an undue deposition of fat,
constituting obesity, la not a healthy
but a morbid condttlon.lt Is quite as
natural for us to arrive at the oppo
site conclusion, which isjustnined by
experience and observatly, l. e., that
the reduction of fat in cases <5f’corpu
lency is invariably followed by an im
provement of strength, spirits, and
physical comforts. Allan’s Anti-Fat
will reduce a fat person from two to
five pounds a week. Sold by drug
gists.

We Have been informed that on last
Friday about 7 o’clock twoconvlcte, at
work on the Barnwoli Railroad, made
their escape by knocking the guard in
the faee and head. It seems that the
guard, who is nothing more than a boy,
while taking the convicts from tk«»tr
a,ip at the hour above stated, they
mva bow managed to get , his pistol
otfi^ by wrenching It from bds
hands. Then one struck, him in the
face and on the head with Lis fist,
while the otiier held him. They were
too much for Young America, being
two of tbe largest men In the gang.
Pursuit was Instantly made, but up to
the time of going to press are still at
large. One was under sentence for
two and the other for nine years.
This makes three convicts who have
made their escape slnce the commence
ment of the road.

In spite of the warm and dull sum
mer season Bis Honor tbe Intendant
was called upon to preside over a case
on Friday morning last. It was a case
—one of those kind which are general
ly termed “A Cos* of Misplaced Confi
dence,’* or for th* want of knowledge
and sound sense as to office duty on
the part of an officer, can be put down
in plain English " Unjustifiable Cruel
ty.” We wifi not endeavor to go into
particulars aud give our readers a full
account of the affair, as space will not
permit. It happened in this wise ; A
tobacco peddler by tho name of Mr.
Tyler Smith was sojourning on the
outskirts of our village, having two
wagons of tho weed for sale. Mr.
Smith has been in our midst before,
and unfortunately for him made the
acquaintance of one or two of our citi
zens—officers of the town, etc. On
last Thursday eroning he was inter
viewed by his so-called fond admirers.
Mr. Smith, to while away his leisure
hours, resorts to his deck of cards—
naturally fpr a traveller. His “friends”
joined him in a game on the evening
above mentioned, and to their surprise
Mr. Smith was too much of a man for
them, and they left with an unsatis
fied feeling and an empty pocket.
Later In the evening they returned
and asked for admission in Mr. Smith’s
domicile, but this gentleman showed
no desiie to play again. Upon hear
ing this they becatoe wrathy and re
sorted to another plan to have satis
faction. They at once sought the
marshal and he was duly informed of
the whereabouts of Mr. Smith and his
leisure hour business. This ever ready
aud faithful public servant, tbinklng it
a nice financial job for him, sent a spy
to plan out tho programme for the at
tack, and about 10 o’clock Thursday
night ho in company with bis deputy
went to tho camp and arrested Mr.
Smith and placed him In jail to stand
his trial before His Majesty in the
morning. While the marshal excused
himself for the^nrpose of going to a
neighbor’#to borrow alight, leaving
the prisoner eh&rge of the deputy,
Mr. Smith al^prnpted to make his es
cape and succeeded in getting some
distance, when both tho marshal and
deputy opened fire on him, but with
out hitting their man. He was finally
captured and placed in jail, but plead
ing for liberty, that he would make
his appearance before tho court in the
morning, the marshal demanded 925
as security for his appearance at 10
o’clock which Mr. Smith paid over and
was released. Court convened, the
prisoner tried and acquitted; being
represented by an able council. This
didn’t seem to satisfy tbe marshal-
Satisfaction must be had, regardless
of cost. A warrant was issued for the
arrest of Mr. Smith, and ho was taken
before Trial Justice Allan who held
him In the sum of 9100 bond for his
appearance at the September term of
the (Jjrcuit Court. This ended tho af
fair and no doubt satisfied all who
were concerned.
At the time of tho arrest of Mr.
Smith, he was engaged in playing a
game of cards with a colored man,
who the marshal told to leave as they
did not want him, adding, “ Mr. Smith

Ths
Way to Tell Whether a Ma
chine Will Pay or Not.
Consider the first cost; the probable cost
of repair,* then bow long it w.Tl last. Then
begin to run up tbe profits you expect to re
ceive by its use, and you will see whether it
will pay or not.
For example, we wifi run up the cost and
profits of one of TUOLE’S LATEST IM
PROVED FIRE-PROOF CONDENSER AND
PERFECT DUSTER. The coet of one for a
40 saw gin is $46. This includes tho at
taching of it to the gin, and proving whether
it will do or not We will put down $1 per
year Cor repairs. We will ouw run up what
little we may expect to receive by its use.
The Condenser takes the place of your waste
ful lint room*, which range in cost from $10
to $'.'0, saying nothing about tho much
needed space they take up. Now put down
the next thing they are espcdntly good for,
and that is to burn out when you are least
expecting ii Now, what docs ii e6«t me?
S600 or $1,000, besides, 1 had a good deal

tomers. They fob have to *11 are the risk
and loss of this miserable lint-room arrange
ment, 0ml ar6 entitled to no insurance.
N*ow, put down your immense loss in dusty
cotion. You may conclude tbnt dusty cotton
sells lower, but weighs higher. In this you
are badly mistaken. The matter in the
sarth or sand which gives Storm cotton a
black, dingy cast is as light as a feather.
You can prove it. Go to a black, dusty
place in the road in a dry time, and kick the
sand about, and yon will see it rise and float
off in the air. It is lighter than air. You
will not get rich as (juick by its weights*
you will get poor by its loolfs. Your top
cotton will get badly toiled \h the boll in u
dry, windy time in this vnvy. To provtf
what we sometimes lose by dusty cotton,!
will produce the certificate of II. Red, Esq.,
who had a bale dusted by the Condenser,
and one ginned in a lint-room, in order to
test the difference:
ViSDson, S. C., Sept. 8, 1874.
J. L. Toole—Dear Sir: I did as I told you
about the cotton. I hauled the two bales to
Aiken yesterday. The cotton was all
gathered as near os I could get it. Jafus,
owner of lint-room gin, mnst hate had ftfi
an awfully nasty Hnt room from ginning
dusty cotton. I believi it looked worse af
ter than before it was ginned. You beat
him badly. I got 13J cents for his bale and
14 cents for yours. I lost just enough to
pay for the ginning of one bale, $3.70. I be
lieve in your duster.
Yours respectfully, II. RED.
(!v Now, let us see what can bo saved by it in
one year, supposing every gin to use one. It
is estimated from reliable sources tnat there
is an. average of 126 gins burned acciden
tally throughout the South annually. 8up*
pose them, ifieltading their contents, to av
erage in value $!.(XX). Here is $126,000
in one year frobt this quarter. New, it will
not bo considered exaggeration in cotton
manufacturing circles to estimate that one-
fourth of tho whole crop is damaged by dust,
and wo will average this loss at one-quarter
of a cent per pound, li e generally raise
from four to five million bales pet yearr
Suppose the dusty bales to average 400 lbs,
and the whole crop four tmd a half milfions.
Here is one million one hundred and twenty-
five thousancTdollars more saved that would
have gone into the Lands of the manufbetn-
rer, under the plea of duefy or stofm cotton.
They have machinery to clear it of dust,
therefore, they make more money on it than
on clean cotton They ge' it in many cases
Irom $6 to $10 less per bale, v hen in reali
ty it iias good as any Cotton gathered.
I aift now putting up two styles of these
machines to suit purchasers, ranging In
price from to $46 up, guaranteed to
work well in every particular With but little
attention.
Sthdy the means of saving.
