City life fe not the beat life for chil
dren nod yoang people, aaye a Mew York
now constitoted in a great city,
home ia praatieally abolulied. There is
an end of the pnraoy and sweet domes-
tiefty of the feraily. One of the rery
first requisites of a home which- shall
exert a lasting and wholesome influence
upon the unfolding minds of children is
permanence. To those of eur readers
who have been so fortnaate as to hare
been born in a real 11 home/’ the mean
ing of that delightful word has a deeper
significance than the children of nomadic
parentr can possibly comprehend. Most
of the men who occupy the leading places
in the multifarious activities of life in
this city are country-bred. Their homo
memories are fixed, and as distinct us a
picture hung before the eyes. What
sort of a'home for a child is that whose
reminiscences in after yean will be a
confused panorama of “moving day,'’
with its. sordid mnerica, of innumerable
houses dwelt in for a year or two, of
apartments in one huge caravansary
which were so much like the apart

memory is paxxled to distinguish them,
and of household gods which were set
up ono day to bo huddled away on the

Country living is more permanent
than city living, ond, in respect of this j
l it is more conservative in its influence in
forming the character. But it is also
more restful, and rostfulncss tends to
prolong life and economically develop
mental and physical powers. The bur
dens of city life are very great, It is true;
. but it is pace that kills. People aro apt
to saoor at the trifles which engage the
attention of h village population. New
York, it is said, is so busy, that it cannot
pause to give heed to anything that is
not one of »• the great concerns ” of hu
man life. If wc heard less of this ever
lasting " business/’ we should lire long
er, ha less selfish, and find some time to
cutovate-•moral and 'mental growths
which require leisure.

Who W«o Major Andre ?
* . > t
“ Did you ever read that in the papers
about Cyrus Field buildiu’ a monument
to Major Andre ? ” asked Bill Stiggins
of a little knot of cronies sitting around*
the cracker barrel in Gensing’s grocery.
They have seen er heard something about
it, and Stiggins went on to denounce it
in the most unmeasured terms. Ho said
the monument ought to be destroyed as
soon ns built, and Field tarred and fcath
ered.
“ Who—who was this Major Andre,
anyhow ? " asked one of the sitters, who
had been listening to Stiggins’s deuuoci
at ion. r~ >■
“ What! You confess that you don’t
know who Andre was ? ” broke in Gen
sing, the groccryman, contemptuously.
“ Why, every schoolboy knows that it
was Major Andre who tried to blow up
the British Parliament with gunpowde
—he was the author of the gunpowder
plot.”
“ You don’t know anything about it,
piped in old Blinn, the cobbler. “ You
aro thinking about Guy Fawkes. Andre
was the man who invented Jersey light
ning. ” •
"Jersey nothing!” cried the village
constable, squatted on a nail keg. “ You
must have read history a good deaf, you
must. It was Major William Henry
Andre who fired the Ephesian dome
Yon can read all about it iu Paul’s Epis
tle to the Ephesians.”
Tackhqpnmcr, the undertaker, who
was appeplod to, said he wasn’t sure of
anything regarding public men now a.
days, but his impression had been all
along that Andre was one of the men
who assassinated Julias Caesar. He
was opposed to bnilding a monument to
him, as hn didn't like to encourage such
people.
" All wrong, all wrong,” exclaimed a
little man in the corner, who had said
nothing bilherto; * f Andre was the man
--who fired the first gun on Fort Sumter.’’
“ Didn’t he help Booth to escape after
he shot Lincoln, and go the D17 Tor-
tugaa?" asked a man Who had been
thoughtfully rubbing kis head for several
minutes.
Then Bill Stiggins himself spoke up:
’ “ I never saw sueh a pack of ignoramuses
in all my born days. I’ll tell you who
Major Andre was and why I am opposed
to o’d Cy. Field or any other man build
ing him a monument. ^
“ Wall, who was he ? ” all sang out
In chorus.

A remarkable breach of promise case
has been tried In London. Mr. Jack-
son contracted to marry Miss Paris.
Subsequently he became insane, where
upon Miss Paris sued him for not marry
ing her, and has actually recovered $250.
The Lord Chief Baron rated that the ac
tion could be maintained, and that the
defendant’s lunacy did not make a bit of
difference. It was argued that so far
from being incapacitated from marriage
by has lunacy, he all the more needed a
wife to take caie of him. The thing
waa settled on purely abstract principles.
It was nothing that poor Jaekson
couldn’t be married ; that no clergymen
would marry a maniac. It was shown
that Mr. Jackson was rapidly recovering,
and when restored to his sense* might
marry Mis* Paris, but that didn’t change
the verdict. Miss Paris got bar $250.
