A Scbool~Boy Story.—A correspon
dent of the Boeton Saturday Kvening
Gazette tells- the following anecdote of
his school days: “Hinorable liars are
scarce. I remember a few, and they were
high aehool boya, of course. A §<f*ad
of them, pelting each other with snow
balls aa they went over the Common and
up Joy street on the wgy to aohool one
aftermMM), were not such good shots that
out of them did not hurl hit missile
through a parlor window pane. Up went
the window and out popped an angry la
dy’s head. ‘Which of you boys broke
this pane of glass?’ ‘I did it,’ promptly
replied the real offender, stepping forv-srd
to apologue. 1 What’s your name, and
WhOre do you ‘live ?’ The boy responded
truthfulfy; but hit companion, to save
him, cried out: ‘No, no! Idid it! I.
He didn’t do it, and- his name isn’t what
hO said, and he didn’t lire there any
how. My name is So-and-so, and I live
No. something, in such a street, and my
fkther’ll pay!’ The confusion of tongues
and counter-statements so nerplexed
the lady that she concluded tkey were
all a pack of liars, and in a rage she
abut down the window with a bang, and
broke another glass.’'

Buenos Ayres paper money glories in u

the currency of Turkey.
Two terrible catastrophes, brought
about by the depression*of trade, have
startled Berlin. A highly respected mer
chant, the proprietor of a wholesale busi
ness,' which had gradually fallen off, con
ceived, on becoming aware of the impos-
aibility of meeting hia liabilities, the idea
of putting an end to hitnself and family,
who apparently, without any opposition, '
resigned themselves (o their fate. He
■oalmly made the necessary preparations,
bought' strychniue, aud then repaired
with his wife, sister iu law and cousin to
,a wood near Berlin, where they jointly ,
committed suicide. Almost on the very
hour of their death another merchant,
equally reduced in circumstances, at
tempted his own life and those of his wife
aud son by asphyxiation. He and consort
were restored to their senses, but the in-
fant child succumbed to the effects of the
gas. The miserable parents have been
arraigned on the charge of murder.
Story or a Horse’s Tail,—James
T. Wells, Esq., who was a good and
faithful soldier of the Confederacy, was
Wounded at Gettysburg, captured and
confined al Point Lookout. Tuesday be
paraded with the survivors, and after
donning his blue and gold badge, be
thought him of a souvenir of his prison
Hfe to wear also on the occasion. This
consisted of a curiously knit watch chain,
made of black horse hair. One day at
Poiot Lookout the provost martial hitched
his horse in the grounds, and Corporal
Wells, tired of the inertia of prison life
and with an ingenious and fertile mind,
slipped up on the gaily caparisoned steed
and scissored bis beautiful black tail off
to the stump and quickly secreted it until
the affair quieted down, when he began
adding to his prison comforts by knitting
and selling elegant horse hair chains. He
retained one for his own use which is the
ono hu wore on parade.—Columbia Reg

Curious Items.—If a tallow candle
be placed in a gun and shot at a door, it
will go through without sustaiuing in
jury ; but if a musket ball be fired into
the water, it will not only rebound but bo
flattened; if fired through a pane of
gUss it will make n hole the size of the
Dali without cracking the glass; if sus
pended by a thread it' will make no dif
ference, aud'the thread will not even vi
brate. Cork, if sunk two hundred feet
in the ocean, will not rise on account of
the pressure of the water. In the Arc
tic regions, when tire thermometer is be
low zero, persons can converse more
than a mile distant; Dr- Jamison asserts
that he heard every word of a sermon
at a distance of two miles. We have
written upon paper manufactured from
iron, and have seen a book with leaves
and binding of the same material.
Von will always consider that when a
man is nhxioue to tell the truth, ho uses
the simplest language possible; words
of three syllables or more seem to have
been made on purpose to lie with.—

A Newark batehelor dropped in the

whoso wife was absent from home on a

“ Why,” asked he breathlessly, “where
on earth did you get such a preposterous
cigar as that, Charley?” ‘ Had it built
by contract," was the response. “You

Somebody wrote to the editor of a
country paper to ask how be would
"break an ox,” The editor answered
as follows: "If only one ox; a good
way would be to hoist him, by means
of a long chain attached to fiis tail,
to the top of a pole forty foot from the
ground. Then Eoist him, by a rope
tied to his horns, to another pole. Then
deacertd on hia back a five ten pile

let him atart a country newspaper and
trust the people for subscriptions: One
