proceedings which, have just closed
In your own beantifuF and pleasant
little town, I allude, of course, ito the
session of the Orangeburg District
Conference of the Methodist Episco
pal Church, South, which convened in
the Methodist Church at Wllllston, on
Thursday, the 15th inst. at nine o’clock
a. m. Although I am a near neighbor
to you, I knew very little of the good
people of your town, at their homes,
until I was thrown amongst them du
ring my attendance upon the Confer
ence. I am now ready to testify that,
without denominational distinction,
they are all unsurpassed in generous
hospitality. Their homes were thrown
open to the numerous delegates to the
Conference, and everything done that
w&s possible to make them feel at
home, and anyone who failed to enjoy
himself has no one to censure but him
self. Cur good friends up there may
rest assured that they will long be re
membered in klnduess by our people
all through the Orangeburg Distrist,
The session of the Conference, pre
sided over by Bishop Wightman, was
exceedingly interesting. The State of
the Church in all of its interests is
very encouraging as per reports from
nearly every section of the District.
The religious services were deeply
Interesting throughout, and the ser
mons, especially those delivered by
the Bishop ami the Presiding Elder,
were profound and deeply Impressive,
and cannot fail to produce a lasting
and beneficial effect upon the whole
community. The services were con
ducted in the Baptist Church on the
Sabbath, in order to better accommo
date the vast oonregatton that assem
bled, that Church being a larger build
ing, and our Baptist brethren having
kindly tendered it for the purpose.
The ht-uso was filled to if« utmost ca
pacity, and all seemed greatly to enjoy
the interesting and able sermon de
livered by Bishop Wightman. The
Sunday School exercises iu the same
Church, in the afternoon, were well at
tended, and much enjoyed. The chil
dren sang very sweetly, and the music
by Prof. Woodberry, (who added
much to tho interest ol the session
thronghout by bis services in this direc
tion,) added much the enjoyment
of the occasslon. May all the people
of your town be blessed and contlnua
prosperous. * Swm.

Consider the first co«t, the probable cost-
of repair; then how long it will last. Then
begin to run up the profits you expect to re

will pay or not.
For example, we will run up the cost and
profits of one of TOOLE’S LATEST IM

ahd loss of this tuisirable hut-room arrange,
ment, and are entitled to no imurance.
Now, put down jour immense loss in dusty
cotton. You may conclude that dusty cotton
•die lower, but weighs fiigher. In this you
are badly mistaken. Jhe matter ip the
earth or sand which gives storm cotton a
black, dingy cast is as light as a feather.
Yt>ir-can provb it. Go to a black, dusty
place in the road in a dry time, and kick the
sand about, and you will see it rise and float
off in the air. It is lighter than air. You
will not get rich as quick by its weight as
you will get poor by its looks. Your top
cotton will get badly soiled in the boll in a
dry, wtmly- lime m this way. To prove
what we sometimes lose by dusty cotton, 1
will produce the certificate of H, Red, E»q .,
who had a bale diutfid by the Cbndenter,
and one ginned in a lint-room, in order to
test the difference:
Wisdsob, 8. C., Sept. 8, 1874.
J. L. Tooun—Dear Sir.- I did as I told you
about the cotton. 1 hauled the two bales to
Aiken yesterday. The cotton was all
gt^thbred as near as I could get it. Jafus,
owner of liirt-room gin, must have had an
au awfully nasfy Tibt room from ginning
dusty cotton. 1 believe it looked worse af
ter than before it was ginned. You beat*
him badly, I got 13J cents for bis bale and
14 cents for yours. * I lost-just-enough'to
pay for the ginning of one bale, $3.76. I be
lieve in your duster.
Your* respectfully, R. RED.
Now, let us see what can be sfived by it in
one year, supposing every gin to use one. It
is estimated from reliable sources tnat there
is ao overage of 125 gins burned acciden
tally throughout the South annually. Sup*
pose them, including their contents, to av
erage in value $1,000. Here is $126,000
in one year from this quarter. Now, it will
not ,hc considered exaggeration in cotton
manufacturing circles to estimate that one-
fourth of tiie whole crop is damaged by dust,
and we will average this loss at one-quarter
of a cent per pound. We generally raise
from four to five million bales per year
Suppose the dusty bale* to average 400 lb*,
and tho whole crop four and a half millions.
Here is one million one hundred and twenty
fire thousand dollarsmore saved that would
have gone into the hands of the manufactu
rer, under the plea of dusty or storm cotton.
They have machinery to clear >ttuf dust,
therefore, th*y make more menfiey on it than
on clean cotton They gel it in many cases
iroro $5 to $10 less per bale, w hen in reali
ty it is as good as any cotton .gathered.
I am now putting up two style* of theac
machines to suit purchasers, ranging In
price from $30 to $46 up, guaranteed to
work w*U in *v*ry particular with but little
attention.
