Mr, 8. IT. Hsmilloo, of Bu»hncll,
III., ftiw discovered '* process for r>w-
king hard«wood lumber out of com*
mon wheat straw, wkh all tlie cffccto of
polish sod finish which arc obtainable
on the hardest of black walnut or mn.
hoganjr, at ns l.ttle cost ns clenr pine
Initibor can be manufactured for. The
process of manufacture, as explained
by Mr. Hamilton, is ns follows .* Or
dinary straw board, such os is mnnu-
%cturcd at any paper mill, is used for
the purpose. As many sheets arc taken
ns are required to make the thickness of
the lumber desired. These sheets arc
passed through a chemical solution,
which thoroughly softens up the fibre
and completely saturates it. The who'e
is then passed through a succession of
rollers, dried and hardened during th**
pmage, ns well as polished, nod conies
out of the other cud of the muchinc,
hard, dry lumber, ready for use. It is
claimed that the chemical properties
hardening in the fibre entirely prevent
wntcr-soaking, and render the lumber
combustible in only a very hot fire. 1 he
hnnf.-nmg finish on the outside nlso
makes it impervious to water. The sam-
p’cs exhibited-could hardly be told from
hard wood lumber, and in sawing the
difference could not be detected. It is
susceptible of a high polish, and snnH
pVs of imitation of marble, mnhog-
nnv, etc., were shown which might de
ceive the most experienced eye. Not
only does Mr. Hamilfon claim a substi
* tuto for lumber io sash, doors and
blinds and finishing stuff, but also as a
substitute for block walnut and other
woods in the manufacture of nil kinds
of fine furniture, coffins, etc., and also
wn excellent substitute for marble in
marble<top tables, ronntlcpieccs, bu 1
renus, etc. He cla ms that it will not
warp in the least.—Milling anrl Me

THUS. U. McGAUAN,
The Utexro Vote.
The colored vote is reappearing ns a
political force, now that ita old rallying
points are gone. It is finding new
ones, around which it is gathering with
greater power for good or evil than ever
•before. But it wi 1 be more and more
a matter of merchandise. The blacks
are well disposed, but weak and blind ;
and can't- help themsekes. Fears and
bugbears have been freely used by their
leaders t6, influence them. The real
duties and responsibilities of the voter
have nevW been taught them, and the
mass of them are still to be victimised in
various ways. But fear as u. motive,
will give place to temptation. Pan,ion
and appetite, rather than timidity, will
bo worked upon. Where rifles have
been seen, money and rum will flc'tv
at the polls. Where men have been
driven away from the ballot box, they
will bo marched to it to deposit their
purchased votes.
Anywhere in this country this would
he so, with such ignorant masses. It
eon be helped on’y by going to the root
of the matter. But our nitional legis
lators seem to hare had no patience with,
or interest in, tba slow, fur-reachiug
method* of settling the fate of the negro
They exalted the voter—they ignored
the man. Their own moral standards
were fatally in the way of genuine re
oonstruetion meuaurcs. Tlrcir work is
done; the seeds of a selfish, short
sighted policy are bearing fruit.
The great work of the Constitutional
Amendments cannot of itself secure the
political salvation of the negro. It is
like a bridge thrown half way across a
chasm. Only the msnhood of the blacks
can bridge the other half.
