During the session of the Plate Med-
icnl A^ociatloB, htld iuJ haj'lytou .last
week, Dr. J. F. Qeddings, of a coui*
mittee appointed, under resolution at the
Inwt nnuual meeting of the Association,
made a verbal report on tbc subject of
euthanasia, or the propriety and feftsi*
bility of hastening death when the phy.
sdcun is absolutely ’ sure that death
would ensue, and which culled forth
considerable discussion by the doctors
present—some being strongly iu favor
of and others as strongly opposed to the
measure. There is something to us ex,
trcmcly horrible iu snch a discussion.
Cun a pbvslrian be absolutely sure tluU
a patient will dh, and when ? Can there
possibly be a combination of circum
stances that w ould justily one ip taking
tho life of another, even if it be to re
lieve him of sufforiog ? Before such a
practice can be justified, it seems to us,
tbc whole course of civilization must be
changed, and be accommodated tb n
condition of tilings entirely foreign now
to hutnn'h sensibilities nnd human affeo
tions. The wliole eodo of morals must
be ovci turned, and the accepted theories
of to-day must givo place to new and
advanced ideas, H»eet sboekkg t* eon
template. The statutes of the States of
the earth must bo repented, and tlie
justice upon which jurisprudence is
based must lx* destroyed, new laws
must be enacted, and a new theory of
jastrer must be discovered by which the
customs and rights of in«» thail be reg
ulate!.—OrtnqlMng ‘#<o»r4a*f. 1 • 1
