We generally consider a Con gressman as a wise and patriotic public servant, but the bitter and wordy de bate on the army appropriation bill shows that Congressmen are but party slaves. Some time ago the Republicans said that they would support separate 1>iQs for the repeal of the lows authorising and requiring test oaths for United States jurors, the presence of troops at elections, and other JaWt equally ob> jcctfoMbte A few days ago Senator Bnyard introduced such a bill, and s'raiicbtway Edmunds, the saint, objects ; and, following his lead, the Republican caucus determines to oppose the passage of auy enactment changing the present election laws. There is no safety for the Democracy in retredt / there i* saceess in a bold, stern, persistent adherence to the right. The day for compromise is pjst; lot ns hear no more oi it. Radical Patriotism. Tfio African Exodus from the Mis sissippi Valley is chocked, and, for the good of their race, it is to be hoped finally stopped. In all that he does, the average Yankee has a motive, gene- erally, of the meanest character. He caree no more for the bodiea than for the souk of his colored brethren. In en couraging the exodus to Kansas, he is endeavoring to reduce the population and representation' of the Southern States before the census of 1880 is taken. Ilk statisticians seem to bare overlooked the patriotism with which Southern boys have been baptized, and grown up in the last score of years. It is consoling to know that the party of great moral ideas is in such a desperate strait. Its last forlorn hope will be a failure and disappointment, and the fc!outb will hare as largo, and, wo hope, a better representation next year than now. U-. H-UJ- 1 -!! I Mlffht Might. In the United States Court, now in seSMon in Charleston, It is the evident intention to convict the defendants, charged with violations of the election laws. The masterly arguments of Gena James Connor, K. W. Moise and other able lawyers have thown clearly that the juiQts have been improperly drawn, but all familiar with the hi.-torv of tbo Re publican party will feel sure that such an illegality was a part of the original programme to restore and strengthen their party sway, and not to secure jus tioe to the uegro—the Radical cat's-paw and shuttlmcock. The Tees Oath. For the Information of our readers we putdlsbed the Test Oath which baa to be taken by Jurors In the United States Court: n You do solemnly swear (nr aflUrm) that you wilt support the Ci-nulitutlon of tbe^United States of Atm-rlca ; that you. fiuve not, without duress or con straint, taken up arms or joined any Insurrection or rebellion against tbe United States ; that you have not ad hered to any Insurrection or rebellion, giving aid and comfort; that you have not, directly or Indirectly, given any assistance la money or any other thing, to any person or persona whom you know, of bad good ground to be lieve, to have joined, or to be about to join, said insurrection or rebellion ; or to have resisted, or to be about to re sist, with force of arms, the execution of the laws of tbe United Statee; and that you have not counsrellet! or advised any person to join any insurrection or rebellion against, or to resist with force of arms, the laws of tbe United States.” — --- • - ■■ l l«e Barwvrell Case*. Chaui.kstox, April 11.—Ur. Robt. Al- -drieh to-day presented a motion for a continuance of the cases against the Barnwell prisoners. The afQlavlt states that the defendants were pres ent during the entire November term of tbe court in Columbia, where they werp told their cases were to be tried, and that they were not tried at that term* that this being planting time and they being fanners their absence from home Would entail a great loss, and that one of their witnesses was absent from the State. Judge Bond snid ; “ We can’t con tinue these cases because the farmers are going to plant It will always be planting time or harvest time or pic nic time, or these gentlemen will get elected^to theLsgislature or toCongress or something else will occur to pre vent them from attending. You had better make an arrangement with the District Attorney to flx a day for trial. I’ve no doubt that he will give you reasonable time.” Mr. Aldrich thereupon conferred with the District Attorney, and it was announced that tbe Barnwell cases would be tried on Friday next. It seems Settled that Grant and Til- dea are to be the Republican and Dem - ocratic candidates for the Presidency in 1880. Neither baa any higher claim than that of availability. The survi vors of the lost cause will mourn tbe untimely death of the brave, tree Dick Taylor. . - l ■ i i Bccku.vg. up fo* ByTTLK —The Radicals are neither dead nor sleeping and are already beginning to buckle up for battle. hat their plan of campaign will be has not yet trauaplred, but it is almost certain that they will work for Democratic divisions and upon the ruin of this party ride once more into power. Hence the necessity for Democratic unity and primary elections. If we allow soreheads to divide us we are gone be- yoad salvation. In Abbeville county should we be especially careful of the future—it is big with tbe fate of the country I Ho bettor wsuning could bo given to the voters of Barnwell county than tho above clipped from the Abbeville Med. iutn. The time is now with us that every caution should be taken to work for tho interest of your party. The salva tion of our future depends entirely upon the strmfeBt energy of the Democratic patty. Already the RepnMwan party has commented their notorious work of irauding the Southern people in tbe flection of 1880. v ^ Chicago has gone Democratic by 4,000 majority, electing a Southern gen tleman for major.
