Exlemloa mf the So ml* Carolina Mallread to the Water. 1 [Kenntiid Courier ] A petition has been filed in the United States Court by Mr. John H. Fisher, the Receiver of tho South Carolina Rail road Company, asking that he be al* lowed to extend the tracks of the road to the Cooper River, where the Com pany already owns a site in every way suitable for a water-side terminus. The petition sets forth the urgent necessity fbr this extension, as was explained in the several reports of the Board of Di rectors of the South Carolina Railroad ffem 1867 down to the present time, and the increased value that will result, not only in the utilisation of the water front possessed by the Railroad Com pany, but to the Road as-a whole, by eaabting it to take freight directly to the point of shiptbont. Such an extension, as is now pro* posed, was contemplated deny years be fore tho war. It was not carried CMt, for reasons ihkf need not be described here. Year by year the necessity for the extension has become more evident, and it is now held to be indispensable to the entire success of the Road, for the reason that, while the terminus is in it» present place, Oherleslon cannot expect to retain the advantage it should pos sess over Savannah and Norfolk where thd railroads bring freight of every des- cription, without breaking bulk, to the water, where the vessels are reedy to receive U. Apert from the general ad* vantage to the Company, to be derived from the proposed cmension, there is the special reason for its construction that the saving of the expense of turns, portation across thjs city will most likely enable the Road to obtain the contract for bringing to Charleston the immense amount of rock required for the Jetties iw Charleston Harbor, which can be ob tained from -the-qi&rries near Columbia so toonae, hj penning down to the wa* ter, tho Sooth Carolina Railrord shall bo ia a position toeraospon this buiky^ freight with rapidity at low rates.
