Lavcastkr Cocntt, [March 12.— Sheriff Hunter started to Columbia on the 7th inst., having in charge Fred Mobljr, Sam Scott, Ben Colbert, David Suttoa, colored, and Ocoi^c A. Outcn, white, who were found guilty of grand lar- erny a‘ the late term of the esvions Court and seuteooed to hard labor in the peni tentiary. The sheriff returned yester- day, and brought with him from Cam- deu jail one James Smith, alias James Smith Parker, who wss arrested in Camden recently charged with stealing three hundred dollars in money, a lot of bacon and other aticlcs from Mr. W. B. Cautheo, of this county. The gentle men from whom the money, Ac., was stolon is 91 years old and very .deaf. His wife is also very old and subject to at tacks of vertigo, followed by a semi- comatose condition after each attack, which lasts for hours. These old people had no one living in the huuse with them except s young girl, the grand daughter of Mr. Cauthcn. Smith is a laborer, and moved to Mr. Cauthcrn's last December, intending to farm tht-re this year. Soon after he moved he applied for money or supplies of pro visions. This was refused, and he con cluded to leave. He did leave on tho 14th ultimo, and went a few miles to a place owned by Capt. W. B. Twitty. Before leaving, however, #o it seems, he influenced the young girl above referred to, to get possession of the money and leave with him, which she did. A fee days after this be went to Lancaster, bought a pistol, liquor, Ac., aud was seen to have several ten dollar bills. He was suspected as soon as the larceny was discovered, and was closely watched. He was seen on the 3d instant, on his way to Camden, whereupon a warrant was obtained for his arrest. The next morning Sheriff Dobv, after an exciting race, arrested him in the town of Cam den, and found open his person shout one hundred dollars, a fine Smith &. Wesson pistol and a pair of brass kuucks. The day following Smith’s ar rest warrants were Issued for his wife and the young girl, Mr. Cauthen’s granddaughter. They were arrested, and the girl confessed and gave bond for appearance at the next term of the Court. Smith's wife, failing to give bond, was sent to jail. Smith seems to be quite an adventurer, is a native of Louisiana, lived awhile in Atlanta, Oa.. but name here about two years ago from Fairfield county. He says, so it is ret ported, that he has another wife and one or two children living, aud that he had to leave them on account of a difficulty he got into, in which he killed a negro or two. Ho is a good lading man, aged about thirty-five, fair skin, light hair, wears a mustache, has a wound (gunshot) in the forehead, weighs about ono hundred and sixty pounds, and is about five feet eight inches high. Tbs character of Smith’s wife and the unfor tunate young girl has been up to this time sons rrprocKe. Much sympathy is expressed by the neighborhood for them, as it is believed that they were infiu. enced soley by Smith.—Nncs and Courier. Fatal Hail road Accldeat. Last'vreek a young man named Thom • as Grammaner was found lying insensible and* bleeding profusely from a wound in his head near the tract of tho Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad, about t vo miles this side oi Lexington. He was at once conveyed to his homo, near Lexington Tillage, where he remained unconscious until Sunday afternoon, when he died. The particulars seem to be as follows: I?e went to the stye o! tho road on Saturday, where it was a pretty heavy grade and the freight trains are forced to move slowly, and jumped upon tho rear end of the caboose ear for the purpose of taking a ride, as he had previously expressed a desire to do to some one before the train arrived. The conductor knew nothing of hie being oo the train at all. It seems that ht rode too far and allowed the train to gain too much speed before ho decided to jump off, and whai he did to he was thrown too forcibly against either the cross ties or the iron of the track, or perhaps against the side of the oar. The con ductor and train hands knew nothing of tho kilting until they reached Lex ington yesterday, and were summoned by tho eorener. —Cohmbia Begiiter. An Alabama darkey, for a wager, re cently exposed his head to the furious assaults of a trained goat His confi dence was rewarded by bis widntog the money, for, after a half an hem’s vigorous butting, the goat 'drew off, utterly discouraged.
