After a spirited debalo in tbo Senate on Monday, the 24th, the following nom inee* of the Demoerstso caucus were elec ted to fill the rnrious offieea: Secretary, Col. John C. The carpc‘-bnggers who spent tho sumiuor of thotr lives iu tho South are rapidly gathering iu tbe happy Imuting- grounds of the West.. Unless our young sisters retain Judge Lynch ou the bench they will sooa have cause to regret the Southern generosity that permitted these birds of passage to go West, rich in experience, without so much as the smell of fire upon their garment*. The Re-lblerilww of Hawdall. ri«ht the Devil With Fire. A homely adage suggests the propri ety of fighting Lis Satanic Majesty with fire. Our faith in its wisdom leads us to wMHor an immediate and liberal ap-‘ plication of the for talionit to the Re publican party. * Such a remedy would, in our opinion, work a marvellous change iu its conduct. We should hear less of arrests for alleged int.initiation if the war were carried hi to Africa.' Suppose onr State authorities try it on some of the bright and shining lights. Honest John U no longer snfo under the aegis of Ssnatonal rank; Chamberlain •and Kknptoa need some rest from speech making and speculating, and Cardoso ought to hare some leisure in which to prepare for another competitive exami nation. The Bowthera l.lfe fjwnspnny. IwnWrasace BTATF. The State of Oeorgia is now being cx erclscd considerably by acoiuations and counter accusations between Senator Gordon and Dr. Felton and wiic. Gor don accuses tho Feltons of coquetting with Radicalism, so as to supplement In* dependentism iu Georgia by the black elemsnf, or, in other words. “*A Mack dine of battle, officered by white faces.' 1 The Feltons accuse Gordon of par ticipation in various swindles since the war, and particularly with that gigantic swindle, called “The Southern Life In surance Company,” with which so many of onr Barnwell citisen* arc, to their sorrow, too well acquainted. With regard to Gordon's charge against the Feltous, we have this much to say, that Georgia is now a battle-field of warring Democracy r in which the blacks are dragged iu uoserupulouriy by both fiMtioui. to farther their ambitious projects; and, without passing an opin ion upon the character of the Feltons, male or female, we can only say that, so far aa Gordon's charge is concerned, they are only 11 doing at Rome, as Rome doos." But with regard to the counter charge against Gen. Gordon, we arc very much afraid be has got tbe worst of it; for we know that at the very time he and the weak-minded Governor of Georgia, Colquitt, were lending their hitherto honored names to bolster op this wretched, infamous babble, which impoverished so many of our people, they were well aware that the Augusta branch of the Company was in the hands of a notorious unscrupulous adventurer. J. IT. Hiller; that that office was a - defaulter, for a year or two before tbe explooion, to the amount of $40,000; that the Atlanta kaaach kekia mort gage and other lieu* upon all tbe assets of the A ugnsta branch and its renewsl premiums ; that the carriage and horses even of the forger Miller, by which he dauled the eyes of tbe eornmnshy with ficticious prosperity, were mortgaged to the Atlanta branch, and that at say moment tbe who'c affair waa inject to disaster, If General Gordon or Governor Cob quit (liny tbi« knowledge, then we charge them with a crime almost equal in moral, if not in toga! turpitude; a crime, ala* ! too eomoiaa-amonust our people, ri*,4hai ot assuming for filthy lucre positions of grave trust’aad res ponsibibty, for which they were pot ren dered competent either by pnevwigs training or natural ability. On die other horn of Gm dilemma we gore them. -It is a hopeless task to in quire, as the News and Courier does, for a satisfactory explanation of this 44 1 'Wriffi i '«ver stand against tht blot upon thoir fair escutcheon . .Apart ftvrtn lii* characteristics as a cl8atv«igbted, diligent, able member of Congress, with complete knowledge of parliamentary law, nud large expei ,*ot< as u presiding officer, Mr. Randrffl has been noted ss the staunch and always steadfast friend of honest and economi cal legislation, and ns (be uncompro mising opponent of extravagance, waste and jobbery. These are the elements of his strength, and it i» highly to tbe credit ©f th* Detnocratia majori ties of the House thut they haro a third time, iu tho face of intense personal op position, chosen a man with such charSo twists to preside over the deliberations of the House, to appoint the committees that frame all important legislation, and to ooudnct^tjto ovdtr.qfilg butinqss. It is as much to say: We choose this man with the firm will, who is the res olute champion of honest legislat ion, the foe to all speculative schemes and all de* signs upon the public treasury tor indi vidual advantage, because we desire to endorse his policy, the proper course to be pursued by the House. This is of fur moie consequence to the public than the pure Hud simple triumph of any man could be, considered simply as a personal victory.—/'Ailadefphia ledger. A .T1 jater Von* ajulclde. About 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon as two colored men were passing through the swamp or lowlands immediately in rear of the colored cemetery, beyond Laurel Grove, in the southwestern por tion of the city, they came suddenly up on the body of a man lying on (be ground, who they immediately discov ered was dead He was on his back and had in the grasp of his right ham a pistol. Tho man had evidently been deac several days and was unrecognizable and there was U0 one present who waa able to identifiy the deceased. There being no evidence obtainable, the jury after viewing the remains; rendered a verdict of suicide. Coroner Shcftall held a post mortem examination and found that a ball hac entered tbe right temple, penetrating the brain,, and must have produced fatal ef fort instantly. The deceased was apparently about fifty years of age, was about five feet four inches in height, of good build, rather stoutt wore heavy sandy whis kers, slightly gray, and waa partially bald. He was clothed in a good suit of caseiineru, green and black stripes, and Ins entire underclothing Was perfectly new, as was also his gaiters,* which hac apparently been won. but a short time. His abirt was striped white linen, and hia bat a blaek felt one. The right eye tooth was mbsing, Sis other tee*h being apparently perfect. The pistofwhich was found tightly clutched in the right hand, the index finger retting tn the trigger, is a new silver mounted, four- barrel, Hopkiu’s XL, No 4, New York On the third finger of the right baud wax a plain gold ring, with a Masonic emblem, greatly worn. Ou the inside of the ring was the following inscription: “ JYrfn jujrit, mors non mparwbit. ' His cuffs were fastened with gold cuff buttons, upon the face of which were en graven Masonic and Odd Fellowship emblems. Tho collar-button was gold, sod had once contained a stone which was missing. A pair of gold rimmed eye glasses, "in a black morocco oase, was f6uhd in hts Vest pocket, aad a silver tobacco case was found in the right pants pocket. The top was badly scratched, showing th^ an inscription or name had once been engrafen upon it and had been carefully erased. A two- blade pocket knife, white handle, was also found in the aaiue.
