By cowards and by knaves.
From North,•and Rast, nndi Wist they came,
A hungry, ravenous horde,

More ruthless than the sword.

And looked, with fever smitten eyes,
The thanks the/oould not speak.
And. women raised their wasted arms,
And called on Heaven above, *

The enemies they love.
Ab4 hearts that armies Could not win
Lovocaptured unaware;
Hie strategy lyas sympathy,

And itill from North, and East, and West,
The bounteous stream was poured,
As Awe as Heaven to man forgiven,
Aeliberal as the Lord.
And orphans' sobs snd widows’ cries
Were heard on every hand,
And blastings on our enemies
Resounded through the land.
On every.flower-<scented gale,

British capitalists arc mnk ng a pro
position to fund the entire debt < f the
Btate of Virginia at four per cent.
Virginia is the most involved of all
thh Stiles In the Union. She owes
over thirty millions of dollars, besides
accrued interest, and the repudiation
feeling has been very strong, though
the debt puyere are at present In the
ascendency. If Virginia, In her dread
ful predicament, hae any show of ob
taining such favorable terms, it • n ■
plain that South Carolina could do as
much if the debt question were once
settled. Uoder the consolidation com-
promise, our debt will be reduced to
about $7,900,000, at aiz per cent. Inter
est. Once assure capitalists that this
debt will be paid, and they will doubt-
I *ee agree to fund It at four per cent.,
thus virtually ecallng the debt down
one-third, and making tha entire In-
te/est on the debt not quite three hun
dred thousand dollars. This would
effect practically the same end as the
repudiatlonlsts have In view, and In a
manner much more satisfactory to all
parties. As long, however, as the
Wrangling over the debt continues, no
aid oaa bv sought for from without—
