Two years ago our army captured a
faffs baud of Cheyenne Indians on the

were sent to wreoerratioo in the Indian
Territory. No regard was paid to fami
ly ties in making the separation. Last
Pall they escaped and took up the lino
of march northward, committing many
exoesses, as they songht reunion with
their scattered families.
After a long pnrsuit they were cap
tured by that Christian warrior, Gene
ral Howard, of Freedmeu’s Bureau
fkme, and confined in Fort Robinson.
Ift was resolved to return the poor
Wretches, half s’anred and without
clothing, to the reserVWion. They rc-
fused to go, and on Sunday, the 5t!i
instant—God’s day—it was determined
to starve them into submission. Two of
(heir chiefs were placed iu irons. For
three days the entire party was kept in
prison, without food, clothing or fire,

January 11th, 1879
Charlotik, N. C„ Junuary 15 —
There met in this city to-day a con
vention which has attracted a great
deal of attention throughout the
Southern States, more especially in,
VinAila, N-*rth and South Carolina,
Georgia and Florida. The convention Is
composed of Northern gentleman who
have settled in the South since tbe
war. In view of the frequent atd
gross misrepresentation of the South
on tbe part of tbe Republican politi
cians and newspapers, it occuned to
the other Northern settlers in this sec
tion that a convention, composed of
the chute of cittzens indicated, called to
gether without distinction of party,
religion or local lines, might put forth
an utterance which would go far to
ward convincing the Northern people
of the true situation of affairs in this
section of the country. Accordingly,
about a mouth ago, Mr. Dumont, as
prime mover in the matter, put forth
a circular letter, directing copies of It
to every Northern mao in the South
of whom he could learn. Somehow or
other the movement struck a popular
chord. It was less than a week from
the time the call was issued tha» res
ponses began to pour In. Some were
from Democrats and tome from Re
publicans, some from those who were
Federal soldiers and some from those
who were not; but ihe letters came
ftoni’tho Northern setilere until every
pigeon-hole in Mr. Dumont’s office wae
full of them.
With four exceptions they are of
the same tenor. In more than a hun
dred the writers pledge attendance at
this contention, and all declare tbrir
satisfaction With their Sbuthern
homes, sad that they find the soil
more fertile than they expected. They
cordially endorse the convention, and
hope tbe attendance may be rferge.
Between seventy-five and oua hun
dred delegates were piesent from Tir
glnia, North and Sdoth Carolina,
Georgia and Florida. Mr. Dumont
was chosen President, and a Vice-
President was selected from each cf
the other four States. Tbe committee
cn resolutions submitted a seitos set
