Af a part of tire history of ihe times,
eopy from a late number of (he Co*
its report of the Hon.
Bobcrt Aldrich’s aI >eoch at Hampton
Court House.
We an, from • principle, opposed to
combinations in politics, be*
lievieg that the vtoioe of the people—
t^e Democratic people—should be the
only lav and guide in the selection of
public servants. If that be stifled the
Democratic party drifts from its moor*
ings into the viciousneee of Radicalism.
Never having been, and resolved never
to be r a party to ally political combina
tion, except Itrfar as our dllegiaoee to
Democracy may require, we earnestly
hope that Mr. Aldrich has been mis**
taken in attributing hii defeat to a co
alition of his enemies. We feocive
‘from this speech our first intimation of
the esiutenoe of such a combination, and
{u justice to those of our candidates
with whom we have conferred on the
matter, declare that they were not par
ries to it or cognisant of it.
Ihe E*d ef Use Csu»p»lrw.
The campaign of 1878 is ended. Red
shirts will be luid away until the Summer
of 1880. If any jealousies and per.
soaal grievances have arisen among
Democrats during the campaign they
should be buried forever, and our people,
united in their efforts to preserve imd
perfect the peaoc and good order of the
State, sboold devote themselves with
‘ fresh energy to the swifter development
* of our vast resources. Peace and pros
perity will attract energetic immigrants
to our State, and with an increased pop-
our idle water courses and waste
Unds will bo utilized in the manufacture
of our great staple and in giving em
ployment and homes to- a thrifty and
happy people.

In snhetitating written for oral exam
inations the State Superintendent of
Sdnoarion has done good service, as w
are informed that a high standard has
been taken by the teaehers who have
l&tcly roouved certificates. The free
school a^V-, heretofore deservedly un
popular, caiA^made efficient if parents
will assist the teaohers in their responsi
ble work.
No teacher can do justice to himself
or his scholars without the co-operation
of his patrons, and that cooperation
can be given in various ways, by seeing
that lemons are thoroughly prepared;
that attendance is regular, and especially
by frequent friendly visits to the sohool
room.

T%e Fair of neat year can bo made a
qplendid exhibition if our planters will
only resolve that it shall be. There can
be no better time to commence preparing
for it than the present. We will be glad

to have reports from growers of small
grain who propose to compete for pre

have been, oWiog, we suppose, to the

The attendance was' very good through

quite a success, and reflects much credit
upon its officers. Wo would give a

We propose In our next week's is
sue to show by tbo correspondence be
tween L. C. Northrop, United States
District Attorney, and a magistrate of
the State of South Carolina, that per
jury is the normal condltioh of Re
publican rule In every State in this
Union, as far as the fraudulent cen-
rral authority can spread the blasting,
withering, paralyzing, fetid breath of*
its Immoral tendencies. We would
give this slight warning to Judge
Northrop that, notwithstanding the
confident mariner in which he quotes
the case of Dock Bridges, 2 Woods,
0. C. Rep., Ga, there Is a Nemesis
following fast upon the track of Fred
Nix and others of his kidney, Judge
Northrop included, that will make
them cry before long. Good Lord de

Democratic 'majority
3,79s
We hhve had no specific Informa
tion from three boxes—fibrbardr’e,
Three Mile and Sycamore, but learn
that they have cei talulyuiveu heavy
Democratic major!rles. Wnen returns
from these boxes are received It Is
confidently expected that the tribute
given by Barnwell to Hampton, 'Hon
esty and Home Buie will rise to the
magnificence of a majority of four
thousand votes.
Compared with the result In 1876,
when the Democracy carried Bajuwell
by a majority of 1,230, it is shown
that every Democrat in this “ crisis
campaign ” bus kuowu and done his
full duty.
Our latest advices assure us of the
success of the’Democratic party in at
least thirty counties. Beaufort cer
tainly, and possibly two others huye
gone Republican. In the city of
Charleston the Demociatic ticket is
5,000 ahead.
Talbot, Republican, elected Gover
nor of Massachusetts over Butler, the
beast.
Georgia elects nine Democratic Con
gressmen, two of them Independents.
Gen. Joe. Johnston goes to Qon-
grees from Virginia. N>-w Hampshire
solidly Republican, also Rhode Island.
Connecticut's Legislature Republican ;
no Governor elected. Maryland sol
idly Democratic, also Nevada hud Al
abama.
OtTlt KKW COMGBES8MEN.
It Is certain that AiKeu, Evins and
Tillman are elected to Cougreqg from
the 3d, 4th, and 5th Districts, and
the chances are cr* ally in favor of
Richardson and O’Connhr in the 1st
aud 2d. Verily Radicalism is dead.

Acodsta, Ga., October 31.—The Con

Alexander H. Stephens and other dis

oration was delivered by Col. Chas. C.
Jones. The milltatjf was headed by
the 13th United Stated Infantry Post
Band, from Atlanta. The monument
is seventy-six feet high. It wajs tfiade
u Italy, and is said to be one of the
handsomest in the country. A statue
of a Confederate soldier Is at the top,
and four statues, of Lee, Jackson,
Walker and Oobb, twenty feet from
the baSS. Several Confederate battle
flags Urefe displayed on the stand In
tbnt of the moohmeot. The star-
spangled banner and Confederate flag
were blended and surmounted by an
olive-fringed streamer with the watch
word, “ Peace ?’ The city Is Crowded
with visitors from South Carolina and
Georgia.

There will be a general county con

“Sandford’s Arithmetics are superior to any that I h^ve seen in the fulness of
