Coitvbta, S. C.< October 81.—The
State Democratic ExecntiW Committee
earnestly and heartily congratulate the
Democracy of South Carolina on the
aplendid work already done in the pres
en if canvass, i In every town and village
and in many counties at every cross-road,
the Democratic candidates have con
fronted the- Radical speakers,' turning
upon them their own arguments, and
proving to the people, white and colored,
the paramount fact that there is no
place or hope, no salvation or success for
South Carolina except by and throngh
the Democratic party. In no case have
our opponents been denied a hearing.
Everywhere the colored people have
been invited to the Lemocatic meetings.
In like manner, in conformity with the
policy of the party, the vigilant Demo-
eratic speakers have made themselves
Welcome wherever were gathered togethr
er those who would separate the honest
white man from the honest colored man,
to the lasting injury of the whole State.
The canVass, whatever be said, has
been as peaceful as successful. It is no
more in the pewer of the Democratic
party ^ prevent occassional and acciden
tal offenses than it is in the power of the
organized human society to abolish
crime. But the Democratic party of
this State have the satisfaction t« know
that no Commonwealth in the Union of
equal population is more peaceful than
South Carolina, and tnat in no State
anywhere are the laws, without respect
of party or condition, more fearlessly
and faithfully administered. To the
law we remit those who have grievan
ces. From the law alone and under
the law the Democracy expect and com
pel redress.
The Executive Committee, however,
consider it of the utmost importance
that there shall not be even the faintest
disturbance of the public peace, or any
approach to turmoil or disorder. We
muat regard the interest of the National
Democrocy as well as the interest of
the Democracy of South Carolina. Face
to face as we are with momentous
issues for ourselves and the Republic,
we must not give any excuse for inter
ference with our canvass, or afford any
pretext this year for the introduction
of the hostile element which proved so
embarrassing in the campaign'6T187C.
The Executive Committee arc confi
dent that the Democracy will pursue
without flinching the path they now
tread, tad pursue it to a glorious and
tranquil end. The justice of our cause
gives courage, organization gives force—
work will and shall give us surpassing
and final victory.
John D. Kinnedy, Chairman.

This audacious and ambitious dema
gogue at last finds himself among con
genial associates. On Friday last he an
nounced himself an independent candi
date for the State Senate from Charles,
top, and before nightfall was unanimous
ly endorsed by the vilest Radical con
vention that ever met in that city aa
the candidate of: their party. Thus
qnkkly he has drifted from the honored
position he has heretofore held into
Rndkolism of the most disgraceful type,
for he can find no lower depth than an
association with Bowen, so long the
head and heart of Radicalism in the
metropolis of oar State. It may be that
the compensating head of Providence
preserved the City by the Sea from
the yellow fever this year that it might
have strength enough to defeat and ncu-
this baneeatmg political black
hope that the true men of
that once riot-ridden and plundered city
and county may bury forever, under the
weight of an overwhelming majority for

A special dee]jatcb to the News and
Courier says : Smalls’ long advertised
Radical meeting came off on the 2<kh
at Gillleonvllle, in Hampton county. It
was a complete failure as regards the
Radicals, as only about one hundred
men and women assembled to greet
the bride-taking Congressman, whereas
it was a grand success for the Democ
racy. At least 800 red-sbirts were
present, and most of them were early
on the ground. There vere five full
mounted clubs from Barnwell, and
some o? them travelled sixty miles to
be on hand, all being under the com
mand of Colonel Kirkland. Barnwell
man came from as high up as Baldoo,
and, In fact, the whole of Barnwell
county seem determined to prevent the
Radicals from spanking the baby
county on the 5th of November.
Smalls at first readily agreed to di
vide time, but It was only a pretence,
as he subsequently refused when be
found Mr. Tillman was present to an
swer him. The Democrats then held
a rousing meeting of their own. Speech-
i were made by Myers, colored Demo
crat, the Hon. W. F. Uolcock, Colonel
Moore, Democratic candidate for Sen
ator of Hampton county ; Col. Morri
son, and by the Hon. G. D. Tillman.
Great enthusiasm prevailed among the
Democrats, whilst the Radicals were
so crest-fallen that they held no meet
ing at all
Mr. Tillman says be Is certain Hamp
ton will go largely Democratic, and he
thinks Barnwell will give him a larger
majority than any county in his dis
trict, unless Edgefield shall arouse
herself.

done many noble deeds of kindness
for the people of the South, for which
they should be truly grateful. Among
their list of valuable books we notice

Of SANDFORD’S ARITHMETIC, Hon. HughS. Thompson,'State Super
intendent, (at time of writing, as now, Principal Columbia Male Academy), says:
“Sandford’s Arithmetics are superior to any that I have seen in the fulness of
the examples, the clearness and simplicity of the analyses, and the accuracy of the
rules and definitions. This opinion is based upon a full and thorough test in tho
school-room. To those teachers who may examine these Arithmetics with ref
erence to introduction, I would especially commend the treatment of Percentage
and Profit and Loss. No text-books that I have ever used are so satisfactory to
teachers and pupils
