To fh" Editor o f The Eenph-:
Cannot we find a remedy for this ex
cessive planting of cotton by our
planters? The price of the article is
now down si low that It is a question
whether there is any profit left after
paying the cost of making tho cotton.
This year the crop lu this county, and
perhaps some of the adjoining ones,
is said to be at least one-tltird short.
The crop of tho whole country is esti
mated this year nt 5 000,000 bales ; so
that although our neighborhoods make
short crops, the entire crop will be so
large es to keep prices down very low.
Why not plant less cotton and, get bet
ter prices ? Cannot this be done ? I
think it can.
Tho planters of the South ate all
members of Granges. Why cannot
these Granges meet in convention, say-
in January, or at such time as may
suit best, and look into this matter?
Why Auld not such nn agreement"' 0WUt ^ ^

4S tbfcrbe entered into ? Every plan
ter bind himself to bis Grange to plant
'the coming year two-thirds or three-
quarters only (as may be agreed on)
as much land iu cotton as he planted
the present year. For instance, the
present year’s crop is estimated at
5.600,000 bales. A general agreement
to plant only three-quarters as much
land in cotton tbe coming year wouht
produce say 8,750,000 bales. Now,
would not these 3,750,000 bales bring
as much as the 5,000,000 tales of this
year ? I think there to little doubt of
