Every Housekeeper can lu- Wene© heb pin money by shipping sur plus eggs and poultry to Mr. Coffin, who will do 1 all consignors full Justice : CiunLiwroN, October 11, 1878. To I he Editor <•}' The People: I give you, as requested, a few points with regard t^buslness in poul try, egg**, etc., done In Tennessee that are worth while bringing to the atten tion of the farmers of our own State. Last winter, as long as weather was cold enough, dressed turkeys and chickens were brought to this maraot by the thousands of pounds from Tennessee, ami Iho reason so much of It cams here was that it was so plen tiful and cheap in TenniLsco that it could be brought tore b/exprees at the high eoet uf about.three to four cent* per pound freight, and rven then be sold nearly a« low ae the best beef an?! Sther irieat in the Charleston market, ^ With freights eo much In their favor, why can’t the farmers along the Booth Carolina, Northeast ern and Port Royal Railroads raise enough poultry (and dress it as they do In Tennessee) to supply the Charles ton market, which would bo too glad to bny from them at the same price that Is paid for Tennessee poultry de livered here, aa it world arrive fresher and In better condition (though that from Tennessee arrives generally in per fect condition). Where there Is plenty of poultry of course eggs are plentiful al so, and the buU of the eggs used horq jcome%ffoin Tennessee. Eggs from near home, arriving fresh and in good erder, would naturally have the pref erence, at a little higher ^rico even, If wo could only g?t enough of them. If South Carolina fanners would raise enough poultry and eggs a good many thousand dollars a year would go Into their pockets that now go out of fhs State, because these articles are cheap er elsewhere, and in these “ very hard times” people will buy where they can do so cheapest. Yours truly, Geo. M. Coffin. «§? (»?V* m re- ■ ife-v s - if- ' eapturtd the Democratic oitadel. Sat urday dawned and found several hun* dred “red idiirti’’ prepared to meet him. C. Northrop, Exq,, U. S. Attorney, Charleston, S. C.: Sir: Information has boon given me of certain outrages alleged to Imvo been committed and threatened to bo committed in the District of South Carolina, in connection with the ap proaching Congressional election. This information is of such a character that I deem It proper to call your attention to the laws of Congress intended to protect the freedom and purity of such election, in order that proper stops may be taken to bring to justice those who offend against thorn, and to eo cure to all citizens, without distinc tion of party, while thoelectlon is pond ing, their Just rights. The fltfttemont of crimes against 1 he elective franchise Is condensed in chap ter 7th, Title 70th of tho Revised Statutes, and your attention is espe cially called to the Section 5,520, which enacts : a ‘‘If two or more persons in any State or Territory conspire to prevent* .': :v ■ rd H. Thetfnforcement of this provision is essential to a proper discussion of the merits of the citizens who come for ward as candidate® for Congress. When, therefore, It is invaded by combinations and conspiracies, by force, Intimidation or threats to pre vent citizens from giving their sup port and advocacy to any lawfully qualified person as a member of Con gress of tho United States, and suffi cient evidence of this Is brought to your attention, you will act energetl. oally in bringing those entering Into such eonsplraoies to justice, by caus ing warrants to be Issued against them by some firm and impartial United States Commissioner, and by having such parties brought promptly before him, to be deafC with according to law. Dr. Ell Geddlngs,' a distinguished surgeon of Charleston, died last week at an advanced ago. The citizens of Sumter have erected a brAutiful moument In memory of tho (Confederate dead. This year’s cotton crop is expected to reach between and 5,^ million bales—the largest ever grown. The executive committee of Richland county furnishes red shirts free of charge to persons unable to buy them. The members of the colored Meth odist Church, of Winnsboro, gave five dollars for the relief of tho yellow fever sufferers. Col. Sam. K. Dickenson, one of the most prominent Charleston Republi cans, was converted into tho true faith ou “ Hampton's day " in Charleston. In the October elections in West Virginia, Ohio, Iowa and Indiana tiro Democrats have gained certainly sev en and probably nine members of Congress. James A. Hamilton, a son of the great Alexander Hamilton, died at, Irvington, N. Y., onthe25th, in his 92d year. He was a prominent lawyer in New York city, He leaves r son and (laughter. Mr. James Henry, one of the men who left Port Royal to nurse tho yel low fever sufferers in Memphis, died of that disease in Decat ur a few days ago, Mr. Henry was a carpenter in the railroad shops, and loaves a wife but no children. The grand jury of Edgefield county have found true bills against David Thick, Samson Booth and Benjamin Booth for tho killing of Brooker To ney on August 12th. Also, true bills against Wade Lott, Mark Toney and Jim Coferaan for the killing of Jim Booth and Thomas Booth on the same day. Tiie Radicals have carried Colorado, which every politician expected them to do. Judge R. B. Carpenter, for merly of this State, canvassed the State, and no doubt thinks he con tributed largely to (lie result, aud probably feels even with the Democ racy. The task was not a difficult one, and if he is satisfied the Democrats of this State have no reason to com plain, Before going to press we hear that a Republican caucus was held at the residence of Frank Adamson yester- day, at which several white men, for merly strong Democrats,'were present, and were assured that they would be nominated for certain offices which they were seeking but failed to get from the Democratic party. Their names will he given hereafter.—Cam den Journal. Chester Reporter : Mr. diaries R. Sibley and his stepson, Franklin Adntrts, who live near Harmony Cir- cfe, In this county, have gathered from thirty-seven acres thirteen ^heavy bales of cotton, and are not yet half done picking. They will certainly make twenty-eight, probably thirty* bales. They will make not less than three hundred bushels of corn from twelve acres. Their farm was cultiva ted with two mules. Their fertilizers cost them but little—a*id phosphate composted with barn-yard manure. Tbe net profit of their crop will amount to perhaps not less than one thousand dollars. James W. Turley.—We have been familiar with Mr. Turley's well estab lished reputation since ” ttmo whereof our memory runneth not to the con trary.” His name is a household word In Barnwell county. Purchasers can rely upon hto experience, good taste and honesty, for he fills orders with special care, at the oame prices at which ho sells to persons buying in propria persona. Try him with an or der, for we hear that the matrimonial market will look up towards tho holi days, and brides always charming will be doubly so when dressed in goods bought ut Turley’s.
