On the night of tho 28th ultimo the
rcsideuee of Mr. T. D. McMiJUa, three
rcilps below Buford’)* Bridge, was des
troyed by fire, aud almost everything
bo had consumed byUhO (lames. His
losseo, including those of his father-
in-law, Mr. Z. Ayer, and his eister-in
law, M*sa Yarn, who wore all living
with him, nro estimated at no lees than
$3,000, among which losses there were
$900 in casln Many valuable papers
were lost, but their validity can bo es
tablished. The fire burnt with such
rapidity that it was with much diffi
culty the lives of Mr, Z. Ayer and of one
of Mr. McMillan’s little boys were
saved. Had it not been for the very
skilful matmer in which they were
thrown from an up st&irs window into
the arms of friends standing below
they would now be numbered among
the dead. Mr. McMillan's entire
household has the deepest sympathy
of our community. They will, we
hope, not only have a heartfelt sympa
thy, but a manifestation of truer and
more valuable sympathy in this their
hour of sad misfortune. Mr. McMil
lan is a man beloved by all who know
liim, a perfect gentleman in every sense
of tho word, and one of strict integri
ty. Tho burning of his house was
oagsed by accident from a kerosene

A protracted meeting at White
Pond commenced on the first Sabbath
in August add continued through the
week, embracing the second Sabbath
following. The Rev, A. Bulat conduct
ed tho meeting and preached with his
usual efficiency. The attendance was
largo and much religious feeling was
visible among the congregation. As
the fruits of this religious effort four
teen were baptized, five males and nine
females. Immediately succeeding this
Mr. Buiat commenced aaother meeting
at Healing Springs’ Church, at the
close of which eight were baptized,
being twenty-two In the two churches.
The Rev.'Mr. Bulst is now about fifty
years of age, but has all tho energy of
a young man, and labors indefatigabiy
to promote thecauaoof religion among
his fellow moo. We sincerely hope
that bis life majr Jje long spared, and
that he may coimnuo to be as useful

A serious aud sad difficulty occurrrcd
in Orangeburg county, ou Saturday last,
the 7th inst., which proved fatal to one
of fhc parties.
Mr. John Davis and Mr. Anderson
Tyler had been to Orangeburg village
together, and on their return some inis*
understanding arose, and a resort to
knives was had to settle it. Both were
cut fearfully. Mr. Davis died on the
sjot in a few minutes. The cause of
the difficulty is supposed tofybo a family
affair.
Judge Maher passed through town
on his way to attend Court at Aiken.

this place. The meeting was a har.
mouious one, aud the business transacted
satisfactorily to all.
Mr. B. J. Hammett, the agent of the
Singer Sewing Machine-Co., is about to
move to Florence. We wish him suc
cess in his new field. His brother, Mr.
U. B. Hammett, will take charge of the
agency at this place.
Mi. Tom Ray has kis engine up, and
in running order. Tho engine was put
up by Mr. Metieroft, of Augusta, who
has the reputation of being a first-class
mechanic.
Capt. C. E. Lartigue is putting an
addition to his store, and, when finished,
it will give more room for his lurge
stock.
The proudest Than in town is Capt.
W. H. Bellinger—his wife has presented
him with a daughter. We wish him
much joy. f

town pump, opposite the depot, which
has been out of fix for somp time.

is almost impossibo to walk along With*
out stumbling over one of these good
natured beasts.
Mr. C. C. Cooper and lady, of Gra
hams, paid our totfn a visit last week.
James Nix, colored, has been adjudged
insane, and sent to tho Judge of Pro'
bate to be assigned to the asylum.
Henry Glostcr, colored, has been sent
to jail for refusing to work the roads.
Receipts of cotton for the week, end
ing 7th inst., was 295 bales.
Miss Mary E. Maher, our indefat
igable postmistress, is interesting her
self in behalf of the fever-strickcn peo
ple of the West. Through her exertions
a large box of clothing, 9 bottles of wine
and 24 boxes mustard, besides $16 35
in cash, $8 of which was collected from
children, was sent off on Monday mor
ning. the-Dth inst. The .total amount
of money collected and forwarded for
the above object, from different sources,
is $122 55.
Mr. Rosenthal has completed his new
bakery and oven, and lias commenced
