McRvoy, accompanied by the deputy
shei ill and a few others, called at the

thence to the gallery of Mr. Qunter,

was conversing freely and on various

ow of death,” and now expresses the
belief that the prisoner had bitterly
repented of all his past misdeeds,
which God knows are many. His
father was permitted to visit him In
his cell this morning. The old mab
knelt by his eon clasped his hand, ex
pressed natural feelings for his poor
wayward boy.
Upon the advice of father Joseph
he was removed from the cell, as It
was calculated to interfere with his
'hen spiritual frame of mind. At an
early hour to-day persona began to
assemble around the building 1^ which
Was the doomed man' and by 11 o’clock
about seventy persons were seen
in little groups awaitjng the hour
when R 'bert MeEvoy should cx,piate
upon the, gallows the murder c! the
lamented Capt. las. J. Gregg.
At 11 o’clock sheriff itoily and hJs
posse entered the jail, and immedi
ately cormrpo'oed robing the yoting as-

tice. He walked from his cell to the
galiows, which was in tlio hallway of
the j til, with a firm tread. Tb** rope
was adjusted, the cap placed over his
head, and at l2;55 o’clock the trigger
was sprung and he felt six and one-
half feet, scarcely making a struggle.
The physicians examined him after
he had been suspended twenty min
utes, and pronounced life extinct. In
one half hour he was taken down and

on the four o’clock tra in to Granltville,

class hotel as S. Bangs, but told tbe
clerk if any parcels came for H. H.
E*lmpton to let him know. Some
days subsequently two money parcels
arrived by express for Kimpton, which

himself under the latter name. On
his ar rival he wore a long black board
and occassionally an eye-glass. On
changing his name ho shaved off his
beard, and since constantly wears
spectacles. He , Is about forty-five
years of age, tall and fine looking, and
slightly bald on tha top of his head.
