Barnwell Odunty. f
To the Honorable the Senate aod
:h*«. of Bepreeentatlvee of the
■ State of South Carolina:
The undersigned, members of the
Board of County Commissioners of
Barnwell County in said State, beg
leave respectfully to memorialize your
honorable bodies on the subject of
making provision by aet of the Legisla
ture for building a court house and
Jail attbe eouaty seatof said county.
Tour memorialists show unto' your
honorable bodies, that the'eounty has
to pay an annual rent for a building In
wbloh to hold the courts of general ses
sions and common pleas which Is badly
suited to the purpose, being one of the
churches In said county, without the
oonvenlencee for lighting or warming
the building properly, and .no rooms
for foe Juries either grand or petit.
That the said county Is greatly crlp-
in Its finances by the vast Increase
in foe expenses of transporting to an<]
providing for prisoneri ln the jail of
the Adjoining oounty of Alked, which
costa annually from eighteen hundred
to two thousand dollars more than If
the prisoners Were kept In our own Jail
That our oounty Is poorly able to bear
this Increase of expense and the public
service generally auffcra for the want
of suitable public buildings.
Wherefore, your memorialists pray
that an act be passed at onoeauthoriz
ing your memorlalUts to levy a special
tax and to construct suitable public
buildings under such regulations as
to your honorable bodies may seem
wise. And your memorialists will ever
pray&o. V V'
